Monday Night Wars April ’96!

The Monday Night Wars continue to heat up between Nitro and RAW. WCW is pulling out all the stops to overtake RAW in the ratings, but will it work? They decide to put their fate in the hands of a Giant!

April 1st:
RAW: 2.9

Nitro: 2.8

RAW Notes: The show after WrestleMania XII didn’t have much happening on it. The deranged Mankind made his debut as he made short work of Bob Holly. Also, we saw the debut of Marc Mero (Johnny B. Badd in WCW) who pinned Dr. Isaac Yankeem. It was also announced that new WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels would defend the championship against his former friend Diesel at the next pay per view.

Nitro Notes: What a stacked show Nitro was and yet it still couldn’t beat RAW. Giant wrestled Sting to a no contest, Steiner Brothers won a triple threat tag match over the Road Warriors and Nasty Boys, Hulk Hogan & Booty Man prevailed over Kevin Sullivan & Arn Anderson, WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair pinned Lex Luger in the main event. Go ahead and read that again. Yep, that lost to RAW.

April 8th:
RAW: 4.7

Nitro: No Show

RAW Notes: Vader viciously beat up Yokozuna causing Yokozuna to be carried out of the arena on a forklift! WWF Intercontinental Champion began a feud with the Ultimate Warrior as he tried to freak him out. British Bulldog attacked Ahmed Johnson after they had an arm wrestling contest. Lastly, WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels pinned Jerry Lawler in the main event. Afterward, it appeared that Mr. Perfect had formed an alliance with Diesel as Diesel attacked Michaels with help from Perfect.

April 15th
RAW: 3.1

Nitro: 2.2

RAW Notes: The main angle coming out of the show involved the WWF Intercontinental Championship. Goldust and Savio Vega wrestled to a draw and as a result, the championship became vacant. They also showed comments that were never before aired from Bret Hart who said he wasn’t going to go to another promotion and wanted respect. When he returned he wanted to get a title shot quickly.

Nitro Notes: Hulk Hogan won a handicap match over Kevin Sullivan and Arn Anderson. Also, a street fight between the Nasty Boys and Public Enemy took place. The main event saw WCW World Tag Team Champions Lex Luger and Sting beat WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair and the Giant by disqualification.

April 22nd
RAW: 3.3

Nitro: 2.7

RAW Notes: Goldust wrestled Savio Vega with the vacant WWF Intercontinental Champ on the line. Goldust was able to regain the championship on an otherwise uneventful RAW right before the pay per view on the weekend.

Nitro Notes: The only two matches of note were between Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero and the main event between WCW World Tag Team Champions Lex Luger & Sting taking on the Giant and WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair. Flair accidentally throws coffee into Giant’s face and that sets up a match between them next week on Nitro.

April 29th
RAW: 2.9

Nitro: 2.1

RAW Notes: Davey Boy Smith and his wife Diane confronted WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels for trying to sleep with Diane. This would lead to Michaels and Bulldog brawling and setting up their feud. The main event saw the Ultimate Warrior successfully compete in singles action against Dr. Isaac Yankeem.

Nitro Notes: Nitro aired at 7pm instead of 9pm due to the NBA Playoffs, so who knows what would have happened rating wise. This show was a rather stacked program with WCW World Tag Team Champions Sting and Lex Luger defending against Harlem Heat, Lord Steven Regal battled the Belfast Bruiser in a parking lot brawl and in the main event the Giant won his first WCW World Heavyweight Championship by pinning Ric Flair.

WWF won each head to head contest this month. How long does it take for WCW to take over? Not long as we will soon find out!

Thanks for reading.
