Check out how the NWA kicks off the new year!

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Scene: (currently held by: Ric Flair)
Flair had several contenders to deal with as 1988 started. He came to the conclusion that Lex Luger didn’t have what it took to be a Horsemen and that Michael Hayes was just another pretender when it came to his championship. Flair also had the pressure of having deal with the challenge of fan favorite, Sting.

Flair successfully defended the championship against Michael Hayes on January 1st at the Omni. Most times on the house show market, Flair would retain the championship against Hayes.

At Bunkhouse Stampede on January 24th, Flair lost to Road Warrior Hawk by disqualification but retained the championship. Flair used a chair to keep the championship around his waist.

On January 27th, Flair would retain the championship against Sting at the Omni.

NWA United States Championship Scene: (currently held by: Dusty Rhodes)
Dick Murdoch appeared to the the top challenger and would be collecting money for a bounty that was placed on Rhodes head. Rhodes would compete against several guys on the house show market that included Stan Lane, Larry Zbyszko, and Dick Murdoch.

Rhodes was able to win the $500,000 8-man Bunkhouse Stampede on January 24th last eliminating the Barbarian to win the match.

NWA Television Championship Scene: (currently held by Nikita Koloff)
For most of the month, Nikita teamed with Dusty Rhodes to take on Dick Murdoch and Stan Lane in steel cage matches. Nikita and Dusty were on the winning side of the encounters. At Bunkhouse Stampede 1988, Nikita would wrestle Bobby Eaton to a draw to retain the title. He was attacked by Lane and Eaton after the match.

At the January 26th taping of NWA Pro, Mike Rotundo pinned Koloff to win the championship after Kevin Sullivan hit Koloff in the throat with an illegal object.

NWA Western States Heritage Championship Scene: (currently held by: Barry Windham)
Barry Windham defended the championship against Larry Zbyszko at Bunkhouse Stampede on January 24th. Zbyszko won the championship after Baby Doll hit Windham over the head with her shoe.

NWA World Tag Team Championship Scene: (currently held by: Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard)
Anderson and Blanchard were focused on the Bunkhouse Stampede pay per view, which they ended up losing. For most of the month they worked against Sting and Barry Windham in tag matches with Lex Luger taking part in the matches as well.

NWA United States Tag Team Championship Scene: (currently held by: Midnight Express)
The Midnight Express mainly worked singles matches against guys like Barry Windham, Ron Garvin and Dusty Rhodes. They would compete in tag matches on occasion as well against the previously mentioned men and trade wins throughout the month. However, they didn’t seem to have a steady program at this time.

Other Happenings:
– The Road Warriors have been feuding with the Powers of Pain (Warlord & Barbarian). On January 30th the two teams had a $50,000 benchpress challenge. They also had a ladder match for $50,000 that the Road Warriors would win.
