Yearly Review: WWF August 1991

Two titles change hands, a wedding is crashed, a superstar leaves and more this month in the WWF!

WWF World Championship Scene: (currently held by: Hulk Hogan)
During the August 19th taping of WWF Superstars, Hulk Hogan accepted a challenge made by Ric Flair to see who the best wrestler between the two truly was. Ric Flair would have an interview during the same taping and called Hogan “Thunder Lips.” Which, was Hogan’s character name when he acted in the Rocky movie.

Bobby Heenan would goat Hulk Hogan into accepting a match with Ric Flair at SummerSlam 1991. This was prior to the segment at the taping being aired in September, by the way.

At SummerSlam, Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior were able to defeat Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa and General Adnan to end the feud with the hated trio.

WWF Intercontinental Championship Scene: (currently held by: Mr. Perfect)
Mr. Perfect continued to struggle with a back injury and wouldn’t wrestle much during the month. He did defend the championship against Bret Hart at SummerSlam. After eighteen grueling minutes, Bret Hart was able to win his first major singles championship in the WWF when he forced Perfect to submit to the Sharpshooter.

WWF World Tag Team Championship Scene: (currently held by: The Nasty Boys)
At SummerSlam, the Nasty Boys lost the championships to the Legion of Doom in a match contested under no count outs or disqualifications.

This is the beginning of LOD’s first reign as WWF World Tag Team Champions.

Other Happenings:
– Jake Roberts had the Ultimate Warrior lay in a casket that the Undertaker locked him in previously as a way to prepare Warrior for a match with the Undertaker in the future. Roberts would also bury Warrior in a grave at a cementary up to his neck as another method to prepare him. The final stage saw Warrior enter a room to combat Lucifer and several other snakes. However, Warrior was bitten and it was revealed that the Undertaker and Roberts were in on it the whole time.

– The Natural Disasters beat the Bushwhackers at SummerSlam and tried to attack Andre the Giant afterward but the Legion of Doom prevented that from happening.

– Virgil got the biggest win of his career over his former boss at SummerSlam. Virgil was able to pin the Million Dollar Champion Ted DiBiase to win the championship.

– Big Bossman won his feud with the Mountie at SummerSlam when he prevailed in a jailhouse match. As a result, Mountie had to spend the night in a New York City jail.

– The Ultimate Warrior would leave the WWF after a dispute over money. He would be gone for roughly seven months.

– At the wedding ceremony for Randy Savage and Elizabeth their celebration was cut short. While opening gifts, Elizabeth was greeted with a snake. That led to Roberts and the Undertaker to get involved and injured Randy Savage with the urn.

SummerSlam: 2.7
