Rebooking TNA: Week 2, 2002
The rebooking of TNA returns with the second show. The first NWA-TNA X-Division Champion is crowned!
NWA-TNA opens up the second week with a video highlighting what happened on the first show. Steve Corino screwed Scott Hall over by hitting him with the NWA World Championship and allowed Jeff Jarrett to win the championship.
Steve Corino makes his way down to the ring and is greeted with course of boos by the Nashville crowd. There is a sign that says “Hall Got Screwed.” Corino starts off by saying that not having him in the main event last week is a travesty. He feels like he would have brought respect to the NWA World Championship instead of the guys involved. So, when he was in the back and saw Scott Hall nearing to win the championship he had to take action. Steve says he would have been sick to his stomach had a drunk been the champion. Corino rips Hall saying that he can’t be trusted as a champion and thus he made it so Hall would not be champion. Corino thought if he had to choose that having Jeff Jarrett win the championship was his best option. At least Jarrett would be a fighting champion and Corino would get a title shot. As Corino continues to speak the crowd starts to rumble as Hall is making his way to the ring through the crowd. Hall sneaks into the ring and Corino is oblivious to this. Hall spins Corino around and begins to hammer away on Corino sending him to the floor with a clothesline over the top to the floor. Hall starts to brawl with Steve in the crowd as Corino tried to leave. Security runs over and breaks up the fight as Hall is fired up.
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome everyone to the show and talk about what we just saw. They also say that tonight we will crown the first NWA-TNA X-Division Champion in a four way ladder match! Don West is very excited as the first qualifying match is up next!
Opening Contest: Psicosis vs. Low Ki in a Qualifying Match: Psicosis started the match on with fast pace offense hitting arm drags and a head scissors for the early advantage. That quickly changed after Ki was able to deliver a series of kicks including a cartwheel kick to Psicosis’s face. Psicosis was able to hit a top rope hurricanrana but Ki would finish Psicosis off with the Ki Krusher ’99 to advance to the main event ladder match to crown the first NWA-TNA X-Division Champion.
A video promoting the debut of a new wrestler is aired. The wrestler is standing outside a bar in Nashville talking about how these people represent wrestling fans as being ignorant drunks who don’t know when to stop. They don’t have self control. He goes on to say that Scott Hall is an ignorant, weak drunk who will never remain clean. The man introduces himself as being CM Punk. Punk is drug and alcohol free, thus making him better than you!
Backstage, Jerry Lynn is interviewed by Goldylocks regarding his upcoming match. Lynn remembers what Goldylocks said to him last week and now tonight is his chance to prove that he can not only hang with the young guys but also become the NWA-TNA X-Division Champion. Second Contest: Tony Mamaluke vs. Jerry Lynn in a Qualifying Match: Mamaluke thought it was a good idea to slap Lynn in the face and taunt him. Styles puts over his opponent Juventud Guerrera, but says this isn’t 1997. Juventud isn’t the popular pick anymore. No, instead it’s him, AJ Styles. Styles says he is young and damn good looking. He believes the championship will look great around his waist later tonight.
Fourth Contest: AJ Styles vs. Juventud Guerrera in a Qualifying Match: Guerrera was greeted with a great reaction from the crowd and showed that he still had a lot to offer in the ring. O’Haire dominates Bagwell with a swinging neckbreaker and a snap powerslam. Bagwell tried to fight back with a scoop slam and hit a middle rope shoulder block. However, that wasn’t enough as O’Haire hit a backbreaker and hit a top rope swanton bomb. After the match, a bloody and furious Ken Shamrock came down to the ring with a steel chair but O’Haire bailed to the floor and went to the backstage area while Shamrock was prevented by security from going after Sean.
Backstage, Goldylocks is with Christopher Daniels. Daniels talks about being in this business for several years and is now getting his big shot at glory. He believes that wrestling fans are going to find what he is all about and they will follow him to greatness. Daniels tells Goldylocks he will do whatever he must do in order to become the NWA-TNA X-Division Champion.
Earlier in the week, Shane Douglas sat down and talked to NWA-TNA cameras. Douglas says last week was one night that Scott Hall was better than him. That was on the night out of the year that Hall would be able to beat him. Douglas knows that and is at peace with himself. What he isn’t at peace with is the fact that he failed to win the NWA-TNA World Championship. Douglas says his mission when signing with NWA-TNA was to be able to hold the championship again and toss it on the ground. He wanted to spit on the legacy of the NWA a second time! Douglas knows he will get another chance at doing that, and knows that he will do it all over again. Shane finishes off the segment with his trademark laugh.
Sixth Contest: Little Guido vs. Christopher Daniels in a Qualifying Match: The match was mat based until Daniels kicked Guido in the ribs. Daniels nailed Guido with a spinning heel kick and followed up with an STO. Daniels tried to hit the BME but Guido was able to crotch Daniels on the top rope. Guido went to the middle rope and hit a nice looking neckbreaker for a near fall. Late in the match, Guido attempted a German suplex but Daniels was able to sneak a low blow while the referee was out of position and hit the Angels Wings for the win!
Backstage, Goldylocks is with Ricky Steamboat and Ricky has an announcement regarding next weeks episode of NWA-TNA. Steamboat has seen what is going on between Corino and Hall with all the talk and attacks. So, he is making them wrestle each other next week! Steamboat thinks it’s time for Corino to prove himself instead of complaining all the time.
Joey Matthews comes out to the arena and wants everyone to know who he is. Matthews brings up the X-Division tournament and ladder match, which he was offered a spot. Matthews says that he isn’t a spot monkey and declined the offer. Instead, he is making it clear that after the ladder match he is going to beat the champion with pure wrestling and ability. Matthews doesn’t care about pleasing the fans. All he cares about is winning gold and adding money to his bank account. Joey heads to the back after saying he hopes the champion has courage to wrestle him in the future.
Seventh Contest: Slash vs. James Storm: Storm remembers being busted open last week and mounts Slash in the early moments with a series of right hands. Storm planted Slash with a jumping DDT but couldn’t get the victory. Slash pokes Storm in the eye and hit a shoulder breaker. Slash leaps off the middle rope to hit a leg drop for a two count. Slash attempted a neckbreaker but Storm counters with a backslide to get the win! After the match, Slash attacks Storm and Vampiro runs out with a chain to choke Storm. The double team doesn’t last too long as Chris Harris runs down with a chair and smashes Slash over the head and busts him wide open while Vampiro bails to the floor! Harris checks on Storm while the New Church retreats.
Don West and Mike Tenay promote the four way ladder match to crown the first NWA-TNA X-Division Champion. They are sure it will be a wild match!
Main Event: Christopher Daniels vs. Low Ki vs. AJ Styles vs. Jerry Lynn in a Ladder Match for the vacant NWA-TNA X-Division Championship: All four men go at it and give their all to win the championship to close the second show. The ladder was put to good use as Ki flap jacked Styles chest first onto the ladder set up in the corner. Lynn hit a sick sunset flip powerbomb on Daniels having him land back first onto the ladder. Ki took everyone out with a cartwheel dive over the top onto the floor. Daniels used the ladder to ram everyone in the midsection and head to knock everyone down and almost got the belt until Lynn made the save. Lynn used a chair to hit Daniels across the back and brought in a second ladder. Lynn tried to climb up the ladder but Styles hit a springboard dropkick to knock Lynn off the ladder! Ki grabbed Styles and delivered several stiff kicks to the face and drove Styles across the ladder with a brain buster! Ki heads to the top rope and hits a top rope double stomp with the ladder laying across Styles! Ki tries to climb the ladder but Daniels climbs the second ladder and cuts Ki off. Daniels reaches in his tights to toss powder into Ki’s face! Daniels takes the opportunity to hit the Angels Wings off the ladder! Daniels struggles to his feet and tosses the remaining powder into Lynn’s face before cracking him over the head with a chair. Styles is in the corner holding his ribs as Daniels climbs the ladder and is able to gain possession of the championship to become the first NWA-TNA X-Division Champion!
Don West and Mike Tenay are shocked at the outcome and are disgusted that Daniels would use such methods to win the championship. Daniels is sitting on the top of the ladder with an enormous smile on his face kissing the championship to close the show!
