A Star Shattered: Chapter Eighteen

51uzgPargOL

By 1998, Tammy was pulling double duty working for two companies while Chris Candido had quit the WWF in 1997. Candido didn’t feel like he was getting the proper push and decided to go up to Vince McMahon at a TV taping to let him know he was quitting. McMahon responded, “Well, Skip, you need to do that in writing.” Candido went to Jim Cornette and ripped a paper out of his notebook to write the formal letter to quit the company.

Candido had been helping Dr. Tom Prichard with training guys at the school. The class featured the likes of Shawn Stasiak, Mark Henry, Val Venis, Brakkus and the Rock. Tammy notes that the Rock was a sweet and humble young man. One night, she offered for Rock to come along for dinner, but at the time, Rock was making $400 a week and sharing an apartment with for other guys. He was surviving off canned tuna. Tammy offered to pay for a meal, and Rock accepted. Rock would eat with them three times a week for a few months.

Eventually, Rock started on TV and was presented as a face with a goofy outfit that didn’t get over with the crowd. Tammy was given the direction to be on commentary for his matches to get him over, but the crowd still wasn’t responding to Rock. The men didn’t like that Tammy was gushing over him and the women still didn’t care for Tammy, either.

Of course, Rock went on to great success after turning heel to join the Nation of Domination. He’s now a very successful movie star, but is also still incredibly humble. Tammy thinks he deserves any and all success he obtains.
