A Star Shattered: Chapter Twenty-Six
Tammy says it was always a matter of when not a matter of if she’d get inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. She recalls being inducted into the Cauliflower Hall of Fame in 1996 when she was only 23-years old. She had originally gone there with Vince McMahon, Linda, Jim Cornette and Chris Candido to represent the company. Turns out, she was being inducted for Manger of the Year. She had no idea it was going to happen and she remembers seeing Vince sitting in the crowd with a prideful smile. She proceeded to give an improv acceptance speech.
Eleven years later, Tammy got a phone call at 9:15pm on a Monday night and the caller ID read “Johnny Ace”. She had no idea what he wanted, and thought that he should be at RAW instead of calling her. After a bit of small talk and having Tammy watch the announcement that Shawn Michaels would be inducted into the Hall of Fame, he revealed that they wanted Tammy to be the second inductee.
She was quiet at first, but then attempted to find any reason that she didn’t deserve to be inducted so young. Ace assured her that they felt it was her year. When she hung up the phone she wanted to tell someone, but her boyfriend John never brought his phone to his MMA class. So, she called her longtime friend Bob Mulrenin, who was also her photographer. He was thrilled and John was excited as well.
They told her they’d keep her posted on the announcement and she kept watching RAW, but she wasn’t informed about anything. So, she turned her attention to getting in the best possible shape for the ceremony. She was determined to prove all her haters wrong. She had only eleven weeks to get in the best shape with the help of John. She stopped eating carbs right there and upped her work on the treadmill from a half-hour to two hours.
She finally got the announcement on March 7th. They went to a Buffalo Wild Wings with some friends and Tammy saw her news while eating corn dogs. When she saw the news, she burst into tears because she was so happy. Her workout regime would be kicked into a higher gear since the ceremony was only three weeks away. For the most part, Tammy survived on chicken and lettuce.
The next challenge was to write her acceptance speech. It became easy once she decided to write about the creation of Sunny. She attended the ceremony with John and it was the busiest Axxess she had ever been apart of. Had she not been so excited about the induction, she might have passed out. She was only managing four hours of sleep each night that’s how busy she was.
When she met with Vince McMahon to get her ring she said, “Yes, I’ll marry you.” She did that because she wanted to make Vince laugh and she was able to get the entire room to laugh at the joke.
Tammy notes that she wanted Trish Stratus to induct her, but she didn’t have a say in the manner. She had her speech memorized, but as soon as her music hit she forgot everything. She took a breath and reminded herself to just tell her story. Her speech went incredibly well and some have said it was the best speech of the night.
She does note the irony in her being inducted with Shawn Michaels and how the group photos had them standing in the middle facing each other. They reminded her of what wedding photos would look like. It’s an overall experience that she’ll never forget.
