World Championship Wrestling presents Main Event
Date:
6/21/1992
From: St. Petersburg, FL

Matches:
1.) WCW United States Champion Rick Rude defeated Dustin Rhodes in the finals of the Top Ten Tournament
2.) Arn Anderson defeated Todd Campbell

Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Neither Rude or Dustin is able to get a clear cut advantage at the start of the match. Rude controls Dustin with a hammerlock but Dustin counters with one of his own. Dustin takes Rude down to the mat and drives his knee onto the left arm of Rude. Rude nails Dustin with a back elbow and works over Dustin with strikes and chops in the corner. Rude runs into a big boot in the corner and Dustin hits a clothesline for a two count. Dustin takes Rude over with a vertical suplex. Dustin rams Rude into the corner and sends Rude back first into the corners a few times. Dustin is focusing his attack on the lower back of Rude. Dustin puts a chin lock on Rude but isn’t able to get a submission. We hear from Missy Hyatt mid-match before we go to commercial… Why?

Rude blocks a splash by getting his knees up and Dustin is holding his groin. Rude continues with an atomic drop and takes the time to taunt the fans but holds his back in pain. Rude plants Rhodes with a swinging neck breaker but Rhodes kicks out. Rude keeps a sleeper hold on Dustin but isn’t able to keep Rhodes down. Rude avoids a monkey flip and clothesline Dustin in the middle of the ring. Rude heads to the top rope and leaps off hitting an axe handle but Rhodes kicks out at two. Dustin hammers away on Rude with elbow strikes. Dustin nails Rude with a throat thrust and Rude drops to his knees to stop Rhodes with a low blow. Rude attempts a tombstone piledriver, but Dustin counters the hold and plants Rude with a tombstone! Rhodes has the cover but Rude gets his boot on the bottom rope! Rude avoids Dustin as he goes flying over the top to the floor. Dustin has a sunset flip from the apron and avoids a right hand. Dustin delivers a jawbreaker followed by a clothesline for a two count. Dustin plants Rude with a running bulldog but Madusa is distracting the referee. Dustin clotheslines Rude over the top to the floor but it appears Madusa gave Rude the championship and decks Rhodes with it! Rude picks Dustin up to hit the Rude Awakening for the win. (***1/4. I enjoyed this match as it’s apparent these guys have good chemistry and their styles work very, very well with each other. This time next year we’d be seeing more of these two in the ring.)

2.) Cactus Jack was the guest for the Ross Report with Jim Ross. Cactus Jack attacked Ricky Steamboat at Beach Blast after his 30-minute Iron Man match. Cactus says the beating made him feel warm and there was a glow on him. A match has been signed for the two to meet very soon. Cactus doesn’t mind wrestling a pure wrestler like Ricky Steamboat. Cactus only destroys the lives of people he respects. Cactus says as long as Steamboat is dumb enough to put his name on the dotted line, they’ll keep on battling.

Final Thoughts:
While there wasn’t much going on here, the featured match between Rude/Rhodes delivered a good match and they got plenty of time. The promo by Cactus is okay, but I’m not sure a feud between himself and Ricky Steamboat is something I’m excited about seeing.

Thanks for reading.
