World Championship Wrestling presents Main Event
Date: 8/9/1992
From: Baltimore, MD
Matches:
1.) Arn Anderson & Bobby Eaton defeated Larry Santo & Scott Allen
2.) Dustin Rhodes defeated Dick Slater
3.) WCW United States Champion Rick Rude fought Nikita Koloff to a no contest
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Tony Schiavone reminds us that Ron Simmons has won the WCW World Championship from Vader. We’ll also see the full match between WCW US Champion Rick Rude and Nikita Koloff from Baltimore which also had the debut of Jake Roberts!
2.) Well, in a major upset, Dick Slater got a pin on Dustin Rhodes thanks to Greg Valentine holding down Dustin’s leg. The match was restarted by Ole Anderson and Dustin pinned Slater moments later. Barry Windham came down to make the save for Dustin Rhodes.
3.) Footage of Ron Simmons winning the WCW World Championship from Vader is shown. It’s only the final thirty-seconds of the match or so.
4.) The Ross Report with Jake Roberts is next. Ross asks why Roberts attacked Sting. Roberts says, “why not?” He wanted to get attention and he went after the top guy, not the ring boy. Ross mentions that Roberts doesn’t compete for WCW and charges could be filed. Roberts thinks that Sting should charge him with assault. Or, they could meet in the ring if WCW meets the right number for him. Roberts suggests that Sting quit while he can. Roberts isn’t afraid to pull the trigger. So, they are interviewing a suspect of assault?
5.) Koloff is on the floor where he is met with a kick from Madusa to the groin. Koloff shoulder blocks Rude from the apron and gets a sunset flip for a two count. Rude nails Koloff with a quick clothesline to regain control of the bout. Rude taunts the fans and again grabs his back in pain. Rude controls Koloff on the canvas with a chin lock and jumps down across the lower back of Koloff. Rude puts a camel clutch on Koloff but isn’t able to get a submission. Rude keeps the hold on Koloff until Nikita gets to his feet and drops Rude with an electric chair slam! Rude leaps off the middle rope but misses a dropkick crashing to the canvas. Koloff attempts a big splash but Rude gets his knees up. Rude keeps control of the bout with an eye rake and throat thrust to stagger Koloff. Rude tries a sunset flip but Koloff punches Rude but misses a clothesline and Rude puts a sleeper hold on Koloff. Koloff rams Rude back first into the corner but Rude refuses to let go of the hold. Koloff finally gets Rude to break the hold but Rude manages to hit a middle rope missile dropkick. Rude goes for the cover but Koloff powers out at two. Rude decks Koloff with a right hand a few times. Again, Missy Hyatt shares her thoughts on the match and insults Madusa before we go to commercial.
Koloff begins to get a second wind as Rude delivers right hands. Koloff drives Rude face first into the canvas and a hits a leaping shoulder block for a two count. Koloff power slams Rude but only gets a near fall. Koloff plants Rude with a choke slam but Rude gets the shoulder up at two! Koloff tosses Rude into the corner and Rude accidentally clotheslines the referee. Koloff nails Rude with the Russian Sickle but here comes Cactus Jack with a chair. Rude has the chair and whacks Koloff with the chair. Rude has the cover on Koloff but Sting leaves the commentary table and makes the save for Koloff attacking Rude and Cactus! Sting lifts Rude up for a press slam, but the referee prevents Sting from dropping him to the floor. Sting finally lets go of Rude and grabs Cactus to hit a suplex into the ring. Jake Roberts appears from the crowd and attacks Sting! Roberts whacks Sting over the back with a steel chair! Roberts drops Sting with a short arm clothesline and sets a chair up in the middle of the ring. Roberts plants Sting with a DDT onto the steel chair! Roberts pulls Sting up and proceeds to drive Sting down onto the chair again with a second DDT! Roberts has his snake handlers glove and goes into his bag to grab his snake. The locker room empties to prevent any further damage on Sting. Sting does a stretcher job to end the segment. (***. Alright, so the match between Rude and Koloff was pretty solid and the aftermath with Roberts immediately makes Roberts one of the top heels in the company. The crowd was hot for everything and I enjoyed all of it.)
Final Thoughts:
A solid episode of Main Event this week with a good match between Rude/Koloff and the debut of Jake Roberts makes this a memorable episode.
Thanks for reading.
