WCW Saturday Night 4/24/1999

Written by: Bob Colling

World Championship Wrestling presents Saturday Night
Date:
4/24/1999
From: Boise, ID

Matches:
1.) Jim Duggan defeated Bull Payne
2.) Norman Smiley defeated Lash LeRoux
3.) Kenny Kaos defeated Bobby Duncum Jr.
4.) Barry Windham defeated Scott Armstrong
5.) WCW Television Champion Booker T defeated Scott Norton by count-out

Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Well, this week it’s an hour show and the first four matches are mostly just extended squash matches. Also, there aren’t any interviews on the program. Thus, that leaves me with just the main event to cover, which is the only featured match.

2.) Booker uses his speed at the start to avoid Norton, but is soon backed into a corner and Norton drops Booker with several elbow strikes. Norton misses a clothesline in the corner and Booker manages to power slam Norton! Booker comes off the ropes with a couple of clothesline and finally drops Norton with a leaping forearm smash. Booker spin kicks Norton and plays to the crowd. Norton blocks being sent across the ring and sends Booker into the corner where Norton connects with a clothesline. Norton continues with a short arm clothesline. Norton drives Booker down to the canvas with a back breaker. Norton chops Booker to the canvas and taunts the fans. Booker tries to fight back with strikes but an eye rake stops his momentum. Norton splashes Booker in the corner and continues to taunt the fans. Norton casually tosses Booker down with a power slam. Norton goes to the floor and wraps Booker’s leg around the ring post a couple of times. Norton grabs a steel chair but Stevie Ray comes out and grabs the chair from Norton! Norton confronts Ray about it but returns to the ring. Booker knee lifts Norton and comes off the ropes to hit the scissors kick! Norton clotheslines Booker followed by a backdrop. Booker spins around on the canvas and kicks Norton over the top to the floor. Norton argues with Ray and decides that he’s had enough and walks backstage. Norton threatens Ray saying that Hogan is going to hear about this. (*1/2. A below average contest between the two. Norton was noted as being a big deal in Japan but not doing much in WCW. Kind of amazes me that Norton didn’t get a better presentation. I don’t think he was ever full-time, though. Booker is so good. He should have been World Champion a year prior to his actual run.)

Final Thoughts:
Not much going on here as it was more of a filler week for Saturday Night.

Thanks for reading.
