WCW Saturday Night 6/20/1998

Written by: Bob Colling

World Championship Wrestling presents Saturday Night
Date: 6/20/1998
From: Saginaw, MI

Matches:
1.) Yuji Nagata defeated Hardbody Harrison
2.) Van Hammer defeated Reese by disqualification
3.) Stevie Ray defeated Mike Tolbert
4.) Diamond Dallas Page defeated Eddie Guerrero

Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Hammer helped Juventud Guerrera win at Great American Bash, and thus his feud with Reese must continue on Saturday Night!

2.) Reese starts off with a clothesline after sending Hammer into the corner. Reese slams Hammer down to the mat and taunts the fans. Hammer knee lifts Reese and tries for a slam, but Reese lands on top for a two count. Reese hooks Hammer to hit a delayed vertical suplex. Hammer fights back with a kick and several strikes. Hammer comes off the ropes to hit a shoulder block followed by a scoop slam. Hammer holds his back in pain, but Horace enters to whack Hammer with a stop sign to cause a disqualification. After the match, the Flock enters the ring and attacks Hammer. Raven slowly makes his way down to the ring and stands over Hammer before departing from the ring. (1/2*. I guess you can tell the angle isn’t going very well when it’s regulated to being on Saturday Night. As you’d imagine, this wasn’t a good match and I don’t think anyone cared about it.)

3.) Guerrero arm drags DDP to start the match and taunts DDP telling him to kiss his butt. DDP arm drags Guerrero followed by a hip toss causing Guerrero to crawl to the referee and accuses DDP of using the tights for leverage. DDP plants Guerrero with a belly to belly suplex. Guerrero drops DDP face first over the top turnbuckle and delivers a running dropkick in the corner. Guerrero focuses his attack on DDP’s ribs to keep control of the match. Guerrero comes off the apron to deliver a slingshot senton splash. Guerrero jumps down over DDP’s back and continues to stomp on DDP. Guerrero locks in a modified half Boston Crab, but DDP refuses to give in. Guerrero hits a snap suplex before going back to the half Boston Crab. Guerrero splashes DDP on the back. DDP is able to rollover and Guerrero lands on DDP’s knees. DDP drops Guerrero with a discus clothesline. Guerrero avoids the Diamond Cutter by hitting DDP on the ribs. DDP lifts Guerrero up in a powerbomb position, but switches to the Diamond Cutter for the win. (*1/2. Well, they certainly decided to give us a lower quality match than you’d expect from these two. The finish was cool to see and was the best part of the match.)

Final Thoughts:
I was hoping for DDP/Guerrero to a little more enjoyable, so that was a bit of a bummer. The action this week didn’t deliver and thus makes this show a missable one.

Thanks for reading.
