World Championship Wrestling presents Worldwide
From: Columbus, GA
1.) Brad Armstrong defeated John Peterson
2.) Steve Austin & Brian Pillman defeated Tommy Angel & Chris Sullivan
3.) Erik Watts defeated Mark Canterbury
4.) The Barbarian defeated Joey Maggs
5.) Scott Steiner defeated WCW Television Champion Ricky Steamboat to win the title
1.) Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura talk about the issues between Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes to open the program. The issues started when Dustin Rhodes accepted a challenge from Pillman and Austin without asking Windham.
2.) Tony Schiavone interviews Erik Watts following his victory. Watts feels fantastic after the match and thinks the training he has gotten from Dustin and Barry has worked out. Watts is ready for his next match right now.
3.) Steiner and Steamboat lockup a few times, but neither man gets an advantage. Steiner scoop slams Steamboat two times for the early advantage causing Steamboat to go to the corner to regroup. Steamboat dropkicks Steiner two times causing Steiner to regroup in the corner. Steiner takes Steamboat down to the mat to control Steamboat until the champ reaches the ropes to break the advantage. Steamboat hip tosses Steiner through the middle rope to the floor and Steiner hit his back on the apron. Steamboat checks on Steiner to see if he’s okay, but Steiner shrugs him off. Steamboat holds the ropes to let Steiner back into the ring. They cleanly break apart from each other in the corner to show respect. Steiner shoves Steamboat in the corner and tempers are rising as Steamboat took exception to that. They begin to trade strikes in the middle of the ring. Steamboat drop toe holds Steiner to get arm control. Steamboat takes Steiner over with a fireman’s carry and keeps control of Steiner’s left arm. Steamboat arm drags Steamboat and keeps arm control.
Steiner hip tosses Steamboat, but is kicked away and met with a drop toe hold. Steamboat keeps Steiner on the mat focusing on the arm. Steiner takes Steamboat over with an overhead belly to belly suplex. Steiner backdrops Steamboat and locks in a half Boston Crab. Steiner puts a bearhug on Steamboat in the middle of the ring. Steiner switches to a hammerlock, but Steamboat elbows free. Steamboat misses a running crossbody and falls over the top to the floor. Steiner wants Steamboat to return to the ring. Steiner gets an inside cradle and pins Steamboat to win the title! (**1/2. Well, this has to be one of the quickest angles in wrestling history. Steiner is clearly moving towards a heel attitude, but really what did he do wrong here? The action was fine enough and the finish works for me. Steiner as a singles champion is the right move and I hope this will lead to a bigger focus on Scott Steiner.)
A fine episode of Worldwide as we get a title change and the heel turn of Scott Steiner seems to be on full steam ahead.
