GWF Supercard 7/29/1991

Global Wrestling Federation presents Supercard
Date:
7/29/1991
From: Dallas, TX

MATCH #1: CHAZ VS. THE LIGHTNING KID — 2ND ROUND
FINISH:
Kid wins following the Lightning Strike (tombstone).

Bob’s Take: Kid seemed to offer a hand to Chaz, but pulled it back. At this point, it’s a little weird to see Kid presented as a heel. He obviously pulls it off very well in the future, but in 1991 it doesn’t seem to be a strong suit for him. Kid hit a nice somersault dive over the ropes to the floor. The action is more fast paced than any of the other matches seen thus far in the tournament. It’s a good back and forth battle with both men getting extended moments of shine and near falls. I think this is the best GWF match thus far in its existence and I don’t think it is even remotely close.
Match Rating: ***

Joe Pedicino hosts the Newsroom and talks about the Cartel. Joe wants to know who is in it and who is behind it. Pedicino notes they will be adding a new member and they will not reveal who the boss is behind the Cartel. Pedicino says that Jim Cornette is looking for a new partner for Stan Lane so they can enter the tag tournament. Cornette is considering it a test to see if they can live up to their standards. Pedicino gives credit to WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan for being president of the Special Olympics. Joe also notes that over 100,000 pieces of mail have been delivered to their office in Atlanta. A woman has offered $100,000 for a picture with the Handsome Stranger. Stranger has said he will remove his mask for his wedding night.

Boni Blackstone interviews a fan named Kaye. Kaye has as a mask and rose. Kaye asks why the Handsome Stranger wears a mask.

MATCH #2: THE HANDSOME STRANGER VS. RIP ROGERS — 2ND ROUND
FINISH:
Stranger hits a fisherman suplex and pins Rogers to advance in the tournament.

Bob’s Take: Stranger is being positioned as a top babyface for the GWF and Rogers is part of the heel stable, the Cartel. So, this is actually a bigger match than I’d expect in the tournament. Rasta The Voodoo Man makes an appearance at ringside during the match, and he’s not a light heavyweight in any way. Rasta didn’t do anything at ringside before departing. I thought the action was decent, and this feels a bit like an upset for Stranger to get a clean win over a top heel stable member.
Match Rating: **

Joe Pedicino interviews Muckan Singh and Rip Rogers regarding who the new member and the boss of the Cartel are. Singh teases they’ll announce the member and boss, but decides against it. Rogers does the same, but says they’d tell Joe if he paid them.

Boni Blackstone interviews Handsome Stranger and asks the fan question about why he wears a mask. Stranger kisses Blackstone’s hand as an attempt to hit on her. Stranger says mystery is the greatest part of romance and that is why he wears a mask.

MAIN EVENT: MIKE DAVIS VS. BRIAN ADIAS — 2ND ROUND
FINISH:
Davis counters a sunset flip by holding the ropes and pins Adias by cheating.

Bob’s Take: A far slower paced match than the previous two matches on this show. It kind of feels like the GWF may not know what a light heavyweight division is really all about. Wrestling a similar style to the heavyweights isn’t going to hold interest. Davis at least has some personality. This was one of the most boring encounters I’ve watched in GWF.
Match Rating: 1/2*

Craig Johnson and Scott Hudson interview Adrian Street. Hudson mentions the weight limit here in the GWF is 237lbs. Street says he would be the light heavyweight champion in the US if they lowered the weight and he’s never lost the title. Street wonders how the bigger guys would survive against him at a lighter weight, he doesn’t think they could do it. Street decides to showoff his backside to end the segment.

Final Thoughts:
Chaz/Kid was a good match, and I like the focus that Handsome Stranger is getting. The slow build for the Cartel is entertaining, too. Since GWF airs several times in a week I’m curious how long the slow build is going to last for with such a format. The main event sucked, but I’ll consider this a good overall show.
