My earliest memory of Extreme Championship Wrestling came in January 1999. It was a Saturday morning, before noon, and I stumbled upon a man with a black towel over his face speaking into a camera about how he was going to beat Shane Douglas for the ECW World Championship. At Look Back At: The 1998 PWI 500 Rankings

It’s the eighth installment looking back the PWI 500 magazines that have become a popular publication over the years. 1998 saw the WWF get a lead in the ratings war, while WCW was still highly popular. ECW continued to grow throughout the year, as well.

Unlike last year, the number one ranked wrestler is a toss up between a WCW wrestler and a WWF wrestler. There isn’t controversy attached to this years ranking.

Reminder, I don’t look at every wrestler in the magazine, but a full list of the rankings can be found HERE.

The grading period was from August 1st 1997 to August 31st, 1998. (more…)

My first exposure to Extreme Championship Wrestling came in January 1999 when I stumbled upon the program and saw a man standing close to the camera with a shredded towel draped over his head. He was cutting a promo on then ECW World Champion Shane Douglas about their match a pay per view. I was about 9-years old at that point and I was quite interested and maybe a little scared of this man. I wouldn’t want to ever piss him off. (more…)
