World Championship Wrestling presents Saturday Night
Date: 5/29/1999
From: Augusta, GA
Matches:
1.) Jerry Flynn defeated David Taylor
2.) Hugh Morrus defeated Bobby Blaze
3.) WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Lash LeRoux
4.) Konnan defeated Curt Hennig by count out
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Flynn backs away from Taylor in the corner early on, but Taylor takes Flynn down to the mat and gets control on Flynn’s left foot. Flynn flips Taylor over and kicks Taylor against the ropes. Flynn spin kicks Taylor to the floor and delivers several kicks against the post. Taylor uppercuts Flynn several times to knock Flynn to the mat for a near fall. Flynn nails Taylor with a spinning heel kick and a belly to belly suplex for a two count. Flynn takes Taylor down with a Thez Press and locks in the cross arm bar for the win. (*. Flynn played a face role after being a heel last week. So, clearly on Saturday Night they play whatever role is convenient for each match.)
2.) LeRoux nails Mysterio with an elbow strike, but Rey arm drags LeRoux. Rey comes off the ropes to leg drop LeRoux. Rey misses a strike in the corner and LeRoux body scissors Mysterio over the top to the floor. LeRoux misses a forearm drop off the apron. Mysterio takes LeRoux out with a dive off the apron. Mysterio baseball slides LeRoux but LeRoux does a split and hits a clothesline. LeRoux takes Mysterio over with a twisting powerslam. LeRoux chops Mysterio against the ropes. Rey hammers away on LeRoux a few more times followed by a clothesline. Mysterio is sent chest first into the corner when trying to get out of a sleeper hold. LeRoux taunts the fans on the middle rope. Mysterio takes LeRoux over with a head scissors. LeRoux plants Rey with a spinning sit out powerbomb for a near fall. LeRoux tries for a fireman’s carry slam, but Mysterio counters with a dropkick and hits the bronco buster. Mysterio gets shoved off the middle rope. Lash gets stopped on the top rope. Mysterio hits a top rope hurricanrana for the win. (**. A little boring early on, but there was some solid action thrown in there. LeRoux delivered some good moves on Mysterio and could be useful in the division in the future.)
3.) Hennig goes to the ropes to break a hammerlock by Konnan. Hennig stops Konnan with an eye rake and several stomps and strikes. Hennig sends Konnan back first into the corner followed by more stomps to the lower back. Hennig continues his offense with a backbreaker. Konnan ducks a clothesline to hit a bulldog followed by right hands in the corner. Konnan focuses his attack on Hennig’s left knee with a few kicks. Hennig chokes Konnan over the middle rope. Hennig uses Konnan’s own necklace to choke him. Hennig beats on Konnan with a few stomps on the mat and twists Konnan’s neck. Hennig drops Konnan with a short arm clothesline. Hennig delivers a knee strike but Konnan hits a rolling clothesline. Konnan punches Hennig to the floor and they begin to brawl outside the ring. Konnan sends Hennig shoulder first into the ring post. Konnan rolls into the ring as the referee begins to count and the match ends in a double count out. After the match, Hennig attacks the referee with a few strikes and tosses the referee on the floor. Konnan doesn’t help and decides to play to the crowd instead. (*. If you were expecting an overly exciting match then you’re going to be disappointed.)
Final Thoughts:
Rey/LeRoux had a decent match, but this was a rather weak hour program this week. I wonder if they are getting rid of interviews on Saturday Night, too.
Thanks for reading.
