World Championship Wrestling presents Saturday Night
Date: 7/11/1998
From: Macon, GA
Matches:
1.) Public Enemy defeated Judo Sawa & Sumo Fuji
2.) Chavo Guerrero Jr. defeated Lenny Lane
3.) Ernest Miller defeated Johnny Swinger
4.) Raven & Horace defeated Perry Saturn & Van Hammer
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Fuji works over Grunge with strikes in the corner, but Grunge fights back with a swinging neckbreaker. Sawa runs in and is met with a drop toe hold before Rock gets tagged in. Sawa is driven down to the mat with a double face buster. Rock beats on Sawa with right hands but misses a springboard moonsault. Sawa heads to the top, but is stopped by Enemy with a press slam. Fuji enters and is met with a double gut buster. Public Enemy hit the Drive By on Fuji leading to the victory. After the match, Alex Wright and Disco Inferno storm the ring to attack Public Enemy. Wright and Inferno dance a little bit while Public Enemy is laid out. (1/2*. A fine squash match for Public Enemy.)
2.) Saturn and Raven start off the main event until Raven tags out to Horace. Horace clotheslines Saturn for the early advantage. Saturn takes Horace over with a belly to belly suplex followed by kicks in the corner. Raven drops Saturn arm first over the top rope allowing Horace to deliver a big boot. Raven tags in and clotheslines Saturn in the corner followed by a knee lift. Raven sends Saturn to the floor and hits a side Russian leg sweep into the guard railing. Horace tags in to deliver a short arm clothesline followed by a big splash for a two count. Saturn ducks a clothesline to hit a crossbody for a two count. Horace cuts Saturn off and tags in Raven. Raven tries for a knee lift, but Saturn nearly wins with a rollup. Horace chops Saturn against the ropes and prevents a tag to Hammer. Saturn nearly win with an inside cradle on Horace. Raven gets tagged back in and stomps on Saturn several times. Raven hits a double under hook suplex for a near fall. Raven drop toe holds Saturn allowing Horace to deliver an elbow drop for a near fall. Horace slams Saturn and goes to the top rope looking for a splash and hits for a two count. Saturn tosses Horace with an exploder suplex. Hammer gets the hot tag and cleans house with clotheslines. Hammer drops Raven with a cobra clutch slam. Saturn is setting up a table on the floor. Hammer backdrops the Flock to the floor. Hammer is fired up and axe handles Horace. Saturn dropkicks a chair into Raven’s face! Saturn leaps off the top and puts Horace through the table with a splash on the floor! Hammer grabs the chair and sets it up in the middle of the ring. Raven drop toe holds Hammer onto the chair and plants Hammer with the Evenflow DDT for the victory. (**. I actually enjoyed this far more than I thought I was going to. Hammer did well in his heat segment as the crowd responded very well to him cleaning house. The closing two minutes or so were nicely done.)
Final Thoughts:
Not too bad for an hour long show. The main focus was to promote the PPV taking place the following night. We got a decent tag match which is perfectly fine with me.
Thanks for reading.
