Date: 3/8/1997
From: Berlin, Germany
Matches:
1.) Ahmed Johnson defeated Leif Cassidy
2.) Salvatore Sincere defeated Alex Porteau
3.) Doug Furnas & Phil LaFon defeated Aldo Montoya & Bob Holly
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Cassidy tries to get control with a top wrist lock, but Johnson tosses Cassidy to the mat to counter the hold. Cassidy responds with a slap, and Ahmed looks pissed. Johnson backs Cassidy into a corner and delivers a right hand to knock Cassidy down. Cassidy gains control with a series of strikes, but misses a clothesline. Johnson comes off the ropes to shoulder block Cassidy through the ropes to the floor. Johnson hooks Cassidy for a suplex into the ring and drives Cassidy down to the mat. Johnson nails Cassidy with a scissors kick and plays to the crowd. Johnson misses a spear in the corner and hits the post. Cassidy drives Johnson down with an arm breaker and continues to work over the left arm. Cassidy sends Johnson shoulder first into the corner and kicks Johnson in the ribs. Johnson fights back with a few right hands. Cassidy yanks Johnson down to the mat by his arm and continues to stomp the injured shoulder. Cassidy strikes Johnson in the midsection and continues to deliver strikes to the midsection. Johnson nails Cassidy with a short arm clothesline. Johnson punches Cassidy a few times and spikes Cassidy with a piledriver. Johnson signals for the Pearl River Plunge. Johnson plants Cassidy with a spinebuster. Johnson plants Cassidy with the Pearl River Plunge to win the match. (*1/2. Johnson is such a star. I could watch him destroy people all day.)
2.) Porteau starts off with a headlock on Sincere and delivers a shoulder block. Porteau tries for a rollup, but Sincere holds the ropes and Porteau hits a crossbody. Porteau keeps Sincere on the mat with an arm drag and an arm bar. Sincere slaps Porteau to break out of the arm bar. Sincere goes between the ropes and eye rakes Porteau while the referee was out of position. Porteau avoids a leapfrog and slaps Sincere before hitting a suplex for a two count. Porteau kicks Sincere in the corner, but Sincere hits a slam out of the corner. Sincere hits a middle rope elbow drop and covers Porteau for a two count. Sincere clotheslines Porteau and taunts the crowd before managing a two count. Porteau breaks free, but Sincere puts a sleeper on Porteau until Porteau hits a back suplex to break free. Porteau dropkicks Sincere coming off the ropes for a two count. Sincere tries for a suplex, but Porteau counters with an inside cradle for a near fall. Sincere plants Porteau with Sincerely Yours and wins the match. (*. It’s a boring match between two characters that don’t offer much to the product.)
3.) LaFon and Holly kickoff the tag match. LaFon misses a spin kick and Holly shoulder blocks LaFon to the mat. Furnas tags into the match and they do a test of strength. Holly runs the ropes, and Furnas hip tosses Holly followed by an arm drag. Furnas controls Holly by the arm, but Holly responds with a hip toss and arm drag. Montoya tags in as the show goes to commercial. Holly slams LaFon upon returning, but leaps off the top only to be met with a big boot by LaFon. Furnas tags into the match and clotheslines Holly followed by a dropkick for a two count. Furnas powerslams Holly for a two count. Holly kicks Furnas and almost wins with a backslide. Furnas tries for a suplex, but Holly counters with an inside cradle for a two count. Holly counters a hurricanrana with a powerbomb and both men are down. Montoya gets the hot tag and leaps off the top, but is caught by Furnas. LaFon clotheslines Montoya to hit a Hart Attack for a two count. Monotya sunset flips LaFlon as Holly dropkicks Furnas to the floor. Montoya elbows LaFon, but LaFon hits a full nelson suplex to win the match. (**. I feel bad for Montoya as it appears his offense was edited out during the commercial break. LaFon and Furnas work well together and I think their style is different enough from the other teams to standout if given the chance to do so.)
Final Thoughts:
There’s nothing here that stands out. Ahmed Johnson continues to be a must-see guy for me, but that’s about it for this weeks episode.
Thanks for reading.
