Date: 5/9/1992
From:
Matches:
1.) Nikita Koloff defeated John Peterson
2.) Scotty Flamingo defeated Scott Allen
3.) WCW United States Tag Team Champions Terrence Taylor & Greg Valentine defeated PN News & Johnny Rich
4.) Big Josh defeated Rip Rogers
5.) Tom Zenk defeated Tommy Rich
6.) Dustin Rhodes defeated Bobby Eaton by disqualification
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Jim Ross hosts the show and runs down what we’ll see on the program. Dustin Rhodes battles Bobby Eaton in the main event. Missy Hyatt claims she has Ricky Steamboat figured out and we’ll hear from her later.
2.) Nikita Koloff easily wins his enhancement match following the Russian Sickle. Admittedly, the crowd seemed to be a bit dead for this.
3.) JT Southern appears to be associated with Scotty Flamingo. It’s not a dominate showing by Flamingo, but Flamingo ends up winning his enhancement match following a piledriver.
4.) Valentine & Taylor win their enhancement match when Valentine forces Rich submit to the figure four leg lock.
5.) Big Josh finishes off Rogers with a top rope sit down splash to win his enhancement match.
6.) Zenk and Rich have a standoff in the middle of the ring. Zenk backs Rich into a corner, but backs off cleanly twice. Zenk puts a headlock on Rich to gain the advantage, but is sent into the ropes and shoulder blocks Rich. Zenk hip tosses Rich followed by an arm drag. Zenk keeps control with a wrist lock and takes Rich down with a takeover. Rich backs Zenk against the ropes and delivers a few right hands. Zenk ducks an elbow to hit a crossbody for a two count and arm drags Rich. Rich shoulder blocks Zenk to the mat. Rich kicks Zenk in the midsection and rams Zenk into the corner. Rich eye rakes Zenk and delivers a back rake. Rich misses a splash in the corner and Zenk backdrops Rich. Rich misses a clothesline and Zenk superkicks Rich for the win. (*. I think I reviewed this because Rich is a former NWA World Champion, but he’s strictly an enhancement guy. There wasn’t much going on here.)
7.) Missy Does The Mail hosted by Missy Hyatt is up next. Hyatt says things are getting juicy in WCW. Hyatt was the first to report that Madusa’s personal life is in shambles due to Steamboat. Madusa claims that Steamboat has been following Madusa. We see footage of Madusa cutting a promo on Steamboat. Hyatt says Madusa is as dumb as she looks and didn’t ask her for advice. Hyatt wonders what Mrs. Steamboat is thinking about all of this, and thinks she will find out.
8.) Rhodes and Eaton lockup as both men look for the advantage. Eaton backs Rhodes into a corner, but neither man gets a clear advantage. Eaton punches Rhodes in the corner, but Rhodes decks Eaton with a right hand. Rhodes puts a hammerlock on Eaton, but doesn’t get a submission as Rhodes knee drops the arm. Rhodes tries for a cover, but Eaton rolls out at two. Rhodes shoulder blocks Eaton through the ropes to the floor. Eaton punches Rhodes in the corner followed by an eye rake. Eaton throws Rhodes through the ropes to the floor. Rhodes sends Eaton shoulder first into the ring post and hip tosses Eaton on the aisle followed by a dropkick and a running clothesline. Rhodes rolls Eaton into the ring and decks Eaton for a two count. Rhodes is bleeding from the nose at this point. Rhodes strikes Eaton in the corner, but misses a splash and Eaton chop blocks Rhodes. Eaton splashes onto Rhodes knee a couple of times. Rhodes kicks Eaton away a couple of times. Eaton chop blocks Rhodes on the knee again. Eaton takes Rhodes down to the mat, but Rhodes kicks Eaton away. They trade strikes until Rhodes elbow strikes Eaton. Rhodes leapfrogs Eaton, but lands on his knee and kicks Eaton into the referee, who falls down. Rhodes bulldogs Eaton, but got zero elevation. Steve Austin enters the ring and attacks Rhodes causing the disqualification. Barry Windham comes out and helps Rhodes. (**. The DQ finish sucks, but I thought this was a solid TV match. The brawling on the floor was fun and I love that Rhodes sold his knee to the point that he couldn’t jump on the bulldog attempt. It’s the little things that make so much sense.)
Final Thoughts:
I feel like every week there’s a new development in the Rude/Steamboat issue and it keeps getting better. Eaton/Rhodes was a fun main event despite the finish. I’d consider this an average episode overall.
