World Championship Wrestling presents Main Event
Date: 10/5/1996
From:
Matches:
1.) Amazing French Canadians (Jacques & Carl) defeated High Voltage (Rage & Kaos)
2.) Chris Jericho defeated Konnan by disqualification
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Kyle Petty recently joined the New World Order, and Tony Schiavone speculates if Miss Elizabeth is going to align with the New World Order, as well.
2.) Amazing French Canadians sing their national anthem, which the fans are not a fan of.
3.) Jacques and Kaos kickoff the tag match trading strikes. Kaos shoulder blocks Jacques followed by a dropkick. Carl decks Kaos from the apron and tags into the match to club Kaos over the back. Jacques returns and Kaos is dropped over the top rope throat first. Jacques rams Kaos into the corner and the Canadians double team Kaos. Carl chokes Kaos over the midlde rope, but Kaos backdrops Carl over the top to the floor. Kaos kicks Carl into the railing and Rags enters to pummel Carl with strikes followed by a backdrop. Rage nails Jacques with a spinebuster and all four men are in the ring brawling. Voltage send Carl into Jacques, but Carl clotheslines Kaos. Rage tries for a springboard, but Carl hit a sit down powerbomb instead. Jacques scoop slams Rage and tags in Carl. Carl goes to the top and the Canadians hit the Tower of Lonon for the win. (*. I like the Amazing French Canadians, but there wasn’t much to this one as expected.)
4.) Konnan works over Jericho with several strikes, but Jericho comes back with a spinning heel kick. Jericho avoids Konnan in the corner and hits a hip toss followed by a head scissors and a spin kick to send Konnan to the floor to regroup. Konnan dropkicks Jericho in the midsection and snapmares Jericho to deliver a seated dropkick. Konnan decks Jericho with a rolling clothesline. Konnan continues with stomps on the mat, but Jericho responds with strikes against the ropes. Konnan keeps the advantage and hits a butterfly suplex for a two count. Konnan locks in a leg submission, but Jericho doesn’t submit. Jericho ducks a clothesline and hits a crossbody for a two count. Konnan dropkicks Jericho from the middle rope and locks in a single leg Boson Crab for a moment, but it’s too sloppy and lets go. Jericho nails Konnan with a clothesline to gain the advantage. Konnan dumps Jericho to the apron, but Jericho forearms Konnan and hits a top rope elbow strike for a two count. Jericho sunset flips Konnan from the middle rope for a near fall. Jericho hits a fisherman suplex and hits a springboard moonsault, but Konnan hit Jericho with a belt to cause a disqualification. (*. It looks like this match was taped back when Konnan was the WCW United States Champion, so this is several months old. Commentary didn’t mention the title directly, but it’s an example of a negative for bulk taping. There wasn’t much to this one either and the effort wasn’t all that impressive.)
Final Thoughts:
A skippable episode this week for Main Event for an exclusive standpoint. I was hopeful for more from Jericho/Konnan, and the effort displayed there mostly by Konnan was embarrassing.
Thanks for reading.
