End of show

My Take: The opener between Kidman/Whipwreck was solid. I’ve read other reviews where people consider this to be a ***1/2 plus kind of match, but I don’t agree. It was a good match for a new wrestler in Whipwreck but it wasn’t an elite Cruiserweight match as some people have stated. This would easily be Whipwreck’s best WCW match as, well, he wouldn’t compete all that much in meaningful matches, at least.

Nash/Rey was a quick match. I thought it was okay for what it was. Basically, Nash needed to remind the fans that he isn’t some kind of joke and could demolish Rey if he wanted to. So, Rey’s giant killer gimmick lasts all of three weeks. Back to the Cruiserweight division you go Rey. It’s shame, because Rey will just go back to doing all the things he has already done and doesn’t need to continue to do it.

A lot of people love the hardcore triple threat match. I don’t understand why as it isn’t all that great of a match. The fans were into it, but after about four minutes of the wrestlers hitting each other with the same stuff, they got quiet. If you are a big fan of hardcore wrestling, then you’ll love the match. It’s a really average brawl, in my opinion.

I enjoyed the tag title match. I didn’t have enthusiasm going into it but I was surprised by a pretty good showing by those four men. Would have rather liked the Horsemen get a clean win or just have Windham and Hennig retain. Oh well, at least Benoit is finally a champion in WCW.

Despite the fans being dead for Jericho/Saturn, I thought it was a decent bout.

Booker/Steiner was a good a contest, as well. I really wish Booker would be elevated past the WCW Television Championship. Guys like Disco Inferno should be going for that belt, not Booker T and Scott Steiner. Hell, Buff Bagwell is a perfect fit for that belt. The finish clearly protected Steiner from looking weak.

The main event was a really confusing contest. Going into the match, Flair was playing the babyface role. Hogan had done some pretty mean heel things to Flair. So, people are heavily behind Flair to get his payback. I didn’t like the double turn here because of what they did leading into the show. It was hard for me to understand why I, the viewer, should cheer for Hogan after he has put WCW and Flair for that matter through hell for three years. Plus, this double turn makes the angle with Goldberg on January 4th completely pointless. Next, you have a first blood stipulation where pin falls aren’t legal. Flair bleeds six minutes into the bout but it goes for another ten minutes. Flair ends up winning by pin fall, anyway. Why bother making stipulations if you have no desire to stick with them? That sort of thing bugs the hell out of me. Anyway, the match itself wasn’t anything bad. It was a decent little cage match but not much happened, really.

Overall, four out of the nine matches are decent to good. Rey/Nash was fine for what it was, so maybe make that five out of nine. I thought it was a decent pay per view, not an elite WCW pay per view by any means though. I’d suggest to just go on YouTube to watch this, don’t go on Ebay and waste money on it. I’ll give this a thumb in the middle.

Thanks for reading.
