World Championship Wrestling presents Saturday Night:
Date: 7/2/1994
From: Atlanta, GA
Matches:
1.) Brian Pillman defeated A masked wrestler
2.) WCW United States Champion Steve Austin defeated TA McCoy
3.) Johnny B. Badd defeated Chick Donovan
4.) WCW Tag Team Champions Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan defeated the Nasty Boys to retain the titles
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) They showed the Ric Flair/Hulk Hogan signing for the Bash at the Beach pay per view again.
2.) WCW US Champion Steve Austin cut a pre-tape promo saying that at the Bash at the Beach pay per view he will show Ricky Steamboat how and why he is going to stay the WCW United States Champion.
3.) Mean Gene conducted an interview with Harley Race and Vader. Race calls Guardian Angel an idiot for suggesting that Vader was running from Angel. Race knows that Angel is the guy who whacked his knee and beat him half to death. Vader chimes in and says that Angel isn’t man enough to stand in the ring with Vader one on one. Vader wants to get it on with Angel one more time at Bash at the Beach.
4.) Knobbs and Sullivan start the title match with Sullivan knocking Knobbs down with a clothesline. Sags gets a cheap shot from the apron and allows the challengers to control Sullivan. Knobbs knocks Jack to the floor off the apron. Sags picks up the ring steps and rams them into Cactus on the floor! The camera cuts away as Sags was going after Dave Sullivan with a crutch. Cactus clotheslines Knobbs to save Dave. Moral of the story is to not show a cripple getting attacked. WCW has morals! Cactus is now the legal man and is getting double teamed by the challengers. Sags jumps onto the back of Cactus while he was across the middle rope. Knobbs runs into a big boot from Jack and Jack comes charging out of the corner to hit a running clothesline. Sullivan gets the hot tag and cleans house. Here comes Pretty Wonderful and they destroy Dave Sullivan with a crutch on the floor! Sullivan and Knobbs collide heads and Orndorff whacks Knobbs over the back with the crutch. Kevin gets the cover and pins Knobbs to retain the titles. After the match, Orndorff hit Sags with the crutch too before walking off. Kevin ran to the backstage area but doesn’t get Pretty Wonderful. (*1/2. A mostly uninspired tag match, but that attack by Pretty Wonderful was nicely done and really makes Orndorff and Roma come across like complete dicks for doing that. It also gives a purpose for the title match at the pay per view that probably didn’t exist all that much previously.)
5.) WCW World Champion Ric Flair and Sherri Martel close the show with an interview. Flair says he is a champion and Hogan is just the challenger, that’s the major difference. Flair reminds Hogan that it is just him and Hogan at the Bash at the Beach pay per view. Martel chimes in and says that Hogan can bring whatever he wants, but it won’t matter. Gene just cuts her off and that’s it for the show this week.
Final Thoughts:
As usual, the one-hour shows are easy to watch and this is the same. While there really isn’t much here to in-terms of must-see or anything, I did enjoy the closing segment with Pretty Wonderful. Next weeks episode will be interactive and has a lot more hype around it.
Thanks for reading.
