Rebooking WCW 1999: WCW Thunder 1/7/1999

World Championship Wrestling presents Thunder

Date: 1/7/1999

From: Richmond, VA

Arena: Coliseum

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & Mike Tenay

Mean Gene conducted an interview with WCW United States Champion Booker T regarding Bret Hart. Booker tells Gene that he’s sick and tired of hearing Bret complain about his career since he arrived in WCW back in November of 1997. Booker doesn’t believe there is any excuse for Bret’s loss to him on Nitro two weeks ago other than that Booker T is just the better man. Booker tells Gene that he’ll prove it once again at WCW Souled Out on January 17th.

Match #1: The Giant defeated Disco Inferno in 1:04 following the chokeslam. After the match, Giant kept one hand on Inferno’s chest while staring into the camera and simply saying “DDP… DDP..” over and over.

Match #2: Curt Hennig & Barry Windham defeated The Armstrong (Scott & Steve) in 6:02 when Windham pinned Steve following a superplex to advance in the WCW Tag Team Championship Tournament

Mean Gene conducted an interview with Bam-Bam Bigelow. Bigelow tells Gene that he’s been dominating professional wrestling for over ten years and on Nitro he’s never been more disrespected. Bigelow recalls Wrath bumping into him as if he’s some wannabe wrestler, but he’s a veteran. He’s the Beast From The East. Bigelow warns Wrath to stay out of his way and stay out of his business.

Match #3: Devon Storm defeated Scotty Riggs in 5:17 following the Mindbender. After the match, Daffney and Devon Storm celebrate the win with Daffney screaming with joy.

Match #4: Scott Steiner & Buff Bagwell defeated Horace Hogan & Brian Adams in 6:08 when Steiner forced Horace to submit to the Steiner Recliner to advance in the WCW Tag Team Title Tournament

Mean Gene conducts an interview with Lex Luger regarding what happened on Nitro three days ago. Luger talks about being disappointed that he couldn’t win the WCW World Championship from Kevin Nash, but he’s focusing on the positive and that’s Sting, his best friend, is back in WCW. Luger notes that Sting isn’t there tonight, but he’ll be on Nitro next week. Luger issues a challenge to Nash and Hall for a tag match!

Match #5: Eddy Guerrero defeated Evan Karagias in 3:08 following the frog splash. After the match, Eddy and the LWO, everyone aside from Rey Mysyerio Jr., stomp on Karagias. Eddy cuts a promo about the fluke loss he suffered at Starrcade and passively blames Mysterio for losing to Kidman at Starrcade. Eddy finishes off by saying that he’ll make an example out of someone on Nitro to show what he’s talking about.

Backstage, Mean Gene conducted an interview with the WCW Television Champion Konnan. Konnan talks about the battle of submissions he’s been having with Chris Jericho. Konnan asks Gene where all this is coming from. Konnan thinks the Tequila Sunrise is superior for the simple fact that he’s never submitted to the Lion Tamer, but Jericho has submitted to the Tequila Sunrise. At Souled Out, history will repeat itself.

Match #6: WCW Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman defeated Silver King in 7:26 to retain the title after the Shooting Star Press.

Backstage, Mean Gene chats with Rick Steiner regarding Kanyon. Rick tells Gene that Kanyon is living in a false sense of reality where he thinks he can talk to people a certain way while they eat. Rick reminds Gene that he’s the dog face gremlin and sometimes he makes a mess. Well, Rick might have to make a mess of Kanyon in the ring.

Match #7: Chris Jericho defeated Kaz Hayashi in 5:47 with the Lion Tamer. After the match, Jericho goes to the camera and insists he didn’t tap out and that he’s the greatest submission wrestler ever and not Konnan.

Tony Schiavone confirms that on Nitro, WCW World Champion Kevin Nash & Scott Hall will team up to take on Lex Luger & Sting!

Main Event: Bret Hart defeated Perry Saturn in 10:35 with the Sharpshooter. After the match, Bret refuses to let go of the hold until Booker T runs down to the ring and axe kicks Bret off of Saturn. British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart both rundown to the ring to get a few strikes in on Booker, but Stevie Ray runs down to the ring and helps his brother. After clearing the ring, Stevie looks at his shirt, which is still NWO, and stares at Booker as Thunder goes off the air.

  1. These are great so far. Nice to see someone approaching WCW post Starrcade 98. Been a fan of your rebooking WWF 93-95 for years. Look forward to seeing how WCW 99 comes along.
