Date: 5/8/2004:

New Jack starts the show in the ring to be interviewed. Jack has been talent scouting in Pittsburgh to find a new posse. Jack says everyone knows him and his criminal history. Jack says he’s been to places that nobody wants to go to. Jack says he went to an elementary school to find his new posse. Several kids from a local elementary come out to join Jack in the ring. Jack rambles about something but the morale of the story is that Jack is kid friendly and I was not at all expecting this to be at the start. The kids do his arm taunt, too!
Opening Contest: Chris Sabin vs. Glenn Spectre in the first round: Sabin gains wrist control on Spectre, but that doesn’t last long as they counter each other. Spectre works over Sabin in the corner and gets a rollup after a drop toe hold. They trade a couple of pin attempts. Sabin plants Spectre with the Cradle Shock to win the match. (**. It’s pretty clear just how great Sabin is and that Spectre is a little way behind Sabin in terms of in-ring ability. Sabin is so good in the ring and knowing we’ll get another match from him is only going to make this show better.)
Second Contest: Sonjay Dutt vs. CM Punk in the first round: Dutt controls Punk with a wrist lock on the mat for the early advantage. Punk tries to break free, but Dutt keeps the hold locked in. Punk tries for the Pepsi Plunge again and this time hits it! Punk covers and wins the match. (***. I feel like the Pepsi Plunge is not used on a regular basis and to use it here shows how important the tournament is especially to use it in the first round. Dutt is great and shined throughout the match. This was a good first round match for the tournament between two established indie names.)
Third Contest: Alex Shelley vs. Super Hentai in the first round: Hentai dropkicks Shelley to the floor and hits a springboard moonsault to the floor. Hentai rams Shelley into the ring post and continues with chops on the floor. Shelley snapmares Hentai on the floor followed by a kick to the back. Hentai misses a dropkick and Shelley delivers a superkick for a two count. Shelley chops Hentai against the ropes. Hentai tries for a sunset flip, but Shelley delivers a kick and tries for a suplex. Shelley low blows Hentai and manages to pin Hentai with a rollup. (*1/2. It’s a quick match, and considering Hentai is a former winner of the tournament I was not expecting a quick match. It wasn’t boring as they kept the action going at a decent pace.)

Onryo runs into another clothesline, but kicks out at two. Onryo low blows Soldier and delivers a dropkick to the knee and gets a rollup for the win. (**. I’m not familiar with Onryo at all, but this was a decent match. Onryo showed off some good high flying offense and Soldier did well with his hard hitting moves.)
Jimmy Vegas comes out and cuts a promo wondering where his match on the card is at. Vegas says he’s a superstar and says he’s done more in the past year than anyone else. Vegas talks about taking out Mr. Pittsburgh. Vegas is scheduled to wrestle Shane Douglas on June 5th in a steel cage. In fact, Shane Douglas runs into the ring and attacks Vegas with his music playing. Douglas pummels Vegas in the corner, but runs into a boot. Vegas clotheslines Douglas to gain the advantage. Vegas tries for a slam, but Douglas breaks free and dropkicks Vegas. Vegas ends up bailing to the floor as Douglas plays to the crowd. Douglas grabs a microphone and says that Vegas has bitten off more than he could handle. Douglas proceeds to promote a steel cage match. (Douglas ended up missing the 6/5 show)
Prior to the next match, New Jack and Balls Mahoney cut a promo where Mahoney says after this done they’ll get drunk in the back.
Fifth Contest: New Jack vs. Balls Mahoney in a weapons match: The ring is full of weapons before the bell sounds, so it shouldn’t be a surprise as to how this is going to go. Jack uses a fork on Mahoney within ten seconds of the match starting and Mahoney is already busted open. Jack uses a sickle on Mahoney, too. Jack must like Mahoney at this point because he’s not literally scrapping Mahoney with the sickle. The commissioner comes out and yells with Norm Connors. New Jack ends up winning the match by smashing a guitar over Mahoney’s head from the top rope. It’s a shorter match than I was expecting, but there’s nothing to really describe here except for hardcore nonsense. After the match, Sebastian Dark comes out and ends up destroying Mahoney with a vicious chair shot. Mahoney no sells it, but Shirley Doe comes out and Dark whacks Doe with a chair shot. Doe fights out of a move and hits a fisherman buster. Mahoney has recovered and grabs a chair, but Dark bails to the floor.

Sabin reaches the ropes to break the hold. Punk gets a two count on a rollup, but Sabin counters with a bridge and manages to pin Punk for the win. (**. This didn’t feel like it got past the first gear and it may have been a matter of saving yourself for the finals. I’d be curious to see if the arm injury plays a factor for Sabin in the finals.) After the match, Sterling James Keenan tosses a shirt at Punk and walks out on Punk.
Seventh Contest: Alex Shelley vs. Onryo in the semifinals: The fans throw streamers into the ring, and the match starts with the ring full of streamers. Shelley hits the Shell Shock and pins Onryo for the win. (*1/2. I’m convinced they are saving themselves for the final. Onryo still got to shine a little bit with his high flying moves. This wasn’t bad, just way too short to truly enjoy.)
Jimmy Vegas comes out before the next match starts and shoves Dean Radford. Vegas spits at Radford, as well. Vegas may be wanting a title shot against the winner. Radford shakes Eric Xtasy’s hand, but says he’s not losing tonight.

Radford stops Xtasy on the top rope and hits a Death Valley Driver onto the referee! A masked wrestler slides into the ring and whacks Radford with a chair. It’s JT Rogers and they hit Strawberry Surprise. Xtasy covers and wins the title. After the match, Jimmy Vegas appears and embraces the new champ and returning JT. (**1/4. Xtasy slipping off the ropes was not a botch, but rather a clear part of the match. It’s kind of a bummer that the title change takes place with the interference, but the return of JT Rogers with Xtasy clearly was a big moment for IWC fans. Sexual Harassment were a notable team for the company and would continue to be so afterward. The match decent, but the wrestling in the crowd wasn’t so great.)

Sabin catches Shelley in the corner and hits the Cradle Shock, but Shelley kicks out at two. Sabin hooks Shelley and hits a Tiger Driver for the win. (***. A good match to conclude the tournament. The arm angle did play a factor for a little bit, and I’m totally fine with maintaining a story. Tournaments can be a bit of a drag because you’ll see people three times in one show, but I didn’t feel annoyed by it.)

Two of the best delivering a great indie match. TNA wouldn’t even expose these two and their great talents against each other for nearly another year.)
Chris Sabin joins the ring after the match and is awarded the IWC Super Indy Championship. I’d have to think there would be a match between Sabin and Styles because it makes a lot of sense to do so.

Hamrick crotches Cross and hits the Dixie Driver. Hamrick covers and pins Cross to win the tag titles! (**1/2. A fine main event and the crowd popped for the title change. I don’t think it should have been the main event and being directly after the Daniels/Styles match probably impacted my view of the match. I’m a fan of the Smothers/Hamrick team and it’s great they got a tag title run in IWC.)
Final Thoughts:
I’m going to give this a mild thumbs up. Daniels/Styles is a standout match and the tournament itself is mostly average wrestling with nothing standing out as being must-see. The crowd never seemed to die down and remained energetic throughout the whole show, which also helped the viewing experience.
Thanks for reading.
