Rebooking WCW: Week 3, 1992

Our third week of January 1992 includes coverage of both WCW Power Hour and WCW Saturday Night, leading into our big Clash of Champions XVIII next week.

WCW POWER HOUR

Event Date: January 17th, 1992

Location: Wisconsin, United States

Attendance: 5,000 [SOLD OUT]

  1. Sting & Luger are Set for SuperBrawl II: Sting made his way to the ring for an interview with Eric Bischoff. Sting spoke about how much his former friend had changed, with success rushing straight to Lex’s big, empty head. Lex Luger then came down to the ring with Harley Race to speak to Sting face-to-face. The two traded words back and forth and the match for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship was officially made for SuperBrawl II!
  2. Bryan Clark defeated Diamond Dallas Page in a singles match when Clark pinned Page following a Pumphandle Slam.
  3. Dustin Rhodes is Attacked: Dustin Rhodes was making his way to the ring for a scheduled singles match when he was jumped from behind by Sabu and Cactus Jack, with their manager Gary Hart following closely behind. They beat Rhodes down for a few minutes before Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat could make his way out to save his partner and chase off The Deadly Duo. After making the save, medical personnel tended to Dustin Rhodes.
  4. Chris Benoit defeated Al Perez in a singles match when Benoit forced Perez to submit via the Crossface.
  5. Chris Benoit Post-Match Interview: After Chris Benoit’s quick victory tonight, he grabbed a microphone at ringside and addressed the WCW television Champion, “Stunning” Steve Austin and his manager Paul E. Dangerously. Benoit said that he may not have been good enough last week, but how about now? If Austin is the champion he claims to be, he should be more than willing to take Benoit on for a proper rematch! Austin may have narrowly escaped tapping to the Crossface once, but he won’t be able to escape again…
  6. Rick & Scott Steiner defeated The York Foundation (Thomas Rich & Richard Morton) w/ Alexandra York in a tag team match when Scott pinned Rich following a Butterfly Powerbomb.
  7. Rick Rude Backstage Promo: “Ravishing” Rick Rude, Paul E. Dangerously, and Madusa were backstage for a quick promo ahead of Rude’s main event match tonight. Rude ran Steamboat down, saying that he wasn’t even able to watch over a good friend and tag team partner tonight… so, how could he even handle facing the WCW United States Champion?! Rude said that he was in a league of his own, one that Ricky Steamboat is having a real hard time keeping up with! Tonight, Rude is going to run over Brian Pillman and Steamboat will just be next in line.
  8. “Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Madusa & Paul E. Dangerously defeated Brian Pillman in a singles match for the WCW United States Championship when Rude pinned Pillman following the Rude Awakening. “Ravishing” Rick Rude was able to successfully defend the WCW United States Championship.

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

Event Date: January 18th, 1992

Location: Colorado, United States

Attendance: 6,963

Total Viewers: 2,267,090

  1. The Love Machines (Art Barr & 2 Cold Scorpio) defeated Bill Irwin & Ian Rotten in a tag team match when Barr pinned Irwin following a Frog Splash.
  2. Ricky Steamboat & Rick Rude Feud Recap: A quick video presenting the story so far between WCW United States Champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.
  3. Rick & Scott Steiner defeated The Deadly Duo (Cactus Jack & Sabu) w/ Gary Hart in a tag team match when Sabu used a steel chair on Scott and caused a blatant disqualification.
  4. “Stunning” Steve Austin and Chris Benoit Come Face-to-Face: “Stunning” Steve Austin and Paul E. Dangerously made their way down to the ring to be interviewed on Chris Benoit’s comments made on Power Hour. Austin brushed Benoit off, saying that he’s already taken Benoit’s best… there’s nothing left he has to prove and there’s no challenge there. Chris Benoit then made his entrance and came face-to-face with Austin, not backing down one bit!
  5. Bryan Clark: A Man of Few Words: Backstage, Bryan Clark was stopped on his way to the ring for a quick interview, but provided no comment and kept marching…
  6. Bryan Clark defeated Hector Garza in a singles match when Clark pinned Gara following a Pumphandle Slam.
  7. Kevin Sullivan has Signed with WCW: Tony Schiavone and Jim Ross revealed that the company had officially signed Kevin Sullivan. They ran down his credentials and speculated on what he might bring to the roster. The tone was framed as a major acquisition with more details to follow.
  8. Shane Douglas fought Ron Simmons in a singles match to a time limit draw.
  9. Dustin Rhodes Backstage Interview: Dustin Rhodes was interviewed backstage following his attack last night on Power Hour. He said that he was banged up, beat up, but will be 100% for Clash of Champions next week. He also said that his partner may have been late on the save, but its all water under the bridge between them and he and Steamboat have a lot more to focus on than the wedge Rick Rude has been trying force between them! Rhodes’ focus was on The Deadly Duo and successfully defending the WCW Tag Team Championship!
  10. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat defeated Arn Anderson w/ Paul E. Dangerously in a singles match when Steamboat pinned Anderson following a Flying Crossbody off the top rope.
  11. Sting Video Package: A video package put a spotlight on Sting, showcasing his wins leading up to his match with Lex Luger.
  12. Sting defeated Diamond Studd in a singles match when Sting pinned Studd following a Stinger Splash.
  13. Lex Luger Surprise Attack: After Sting’s main event win, Lex Luger hit the ring and dropped Sting with a shot with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship! The belt connected flush and officials scrambled to check on him as Lex Luger held up his title proudly.

WCW: IN THE NEWS

01/13/92 – 01/19/92

  • Michael Hayes has reportedly increased his booking fee per appearance with WCW, no word on how the office has chosen to respond at this time. (01/13)
  • Matt Borne has failed a drug test. Per the WCW wellness policy, he has been suspended for 30 days, effective immediately. (01/13)
  • After another wellness test violation, Axl Rotten will be sent to a rehab facility for 60 days. Backstage officials are said to be taking the situation very seriously. (01/13)
