Rebooking WCW: Week 10, 1992

WCW begins March with a bang, as this week, the first week’s worth of March episodes are covered. Both WCW Power Hour and WCW Saturday Night will unfold, also a few headlines of promotion news will be featured!

WCW POWER HOUR

Event Date: March 6th, 1992

Location: Nevada, United States

Attendance: 8,414

Total Viewers: 685,748

  1. Steven Regal defeated PN News in a singles match when Regal forced News to submit with the Regal Stretch.
  2. Steven Regal Post-Match Interview: Steven Regal was grabbed for a quick post-match interview by Eric Bischoff. Bischoff asked about Bryan Clark being hot on his trail. Regal brushed Clark off and said that whether it was him or whoever else, Regal fears no man on the WCW roster! Once he has the free time to shut Bryan Clark up, he will be on the hunt for some championship gold. Clark was simply a ‘stepping stone’ according to Regal.
  3. Dustin Rhodes defeated Van Hammer in a singles match when Rhodes pinned Hammer following a Western Lariat.
  4. The Dragon Makes the Save: The match between Van Hammer and Dustin Rhodes ended, but the chaos had just begun. Moments after the bell, Rhodes launched a sudden and vicious beatdown on Van Hammer, drawing loud boos from the crowd. Rhodes pulled Hammer to his feet and continued the assault until the arena erupted as Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat sprinted down to the ring. The crowd popped as Steamboat slid into the ring and quickly evened the odds, forcing his rival to retreat.
  5. Chris Benoit defeated Scotty Riggs in a singles match when Benoit pinned Riggs following a Diving Headbutt off the top rope.
  6. Hart’s Faces of Fear: A package recapping the trouble Gary Hart’s Faces of Fear have caused in WCW since he returned. Matt Borne, The Deadly Duo (Cactus Jack & Sabu), and the newest member, Kevin Sullivan, were each highlighted. Gary Hart and his stable are a force to be reckoned with, being positioned as some of the worst of the worst in WCW. A voiceover from Hart promised that ‘nobody was safe’.
  7. Brian Pillman defeated Shane Douglas in a singles match when Pillman pinned Douglas following an Air Pillman.

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

Event Date: March 7th, 1992

Location: Arizona, United States

Attendance: 10,000 [SOLD OUT]

Total Viewers: 3,345,119

  1. Concession Stand Mayhem: The rivalry between The Dangerous Duo (Sabu & Cactus Jack) and Rick & Scott Steiner hit another level when both teams collided in the most chaotic place imaginable, the arena concession stand, in the midst of the show’s opening! The fight broke out as fans watched on and cheered. The brawl spilled across counters and into the food service areas. The crowd scattered as security failed to arrive quickly while the four wrestlers let loose with fists, trays, and whatever was within reach.
  2. Dustin Rhodes defeated Johnny B. Badd in a singles match when Rhodes pinned Badd following a Western Lariat.
  3. Dusty Tries to Reason with His Son: Satisfied with his win, Dustin Rhodes was set to make his way up the ramp after this opening contest, when suddenly, Dusty Rhodes stood from the commentary table and raced after him. Dusty had some stiff words for his son and begged him to come to his senses. Eric Bischoff appeared and got a microphone between them just in time to catch Dusty demanding answers from his son. On the mic, Dusty said that Dustin hadn’t returned his calls, he avoids him backstage… and Dusty knows that this is how his son acts when he is ashamed! Dusty said that he had no reason to be acting the way he has toward his former friend, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Dustin hung his head and wouldn’t respond. Instead, he pushed hardly past his father and exited up the ramp to the back.
  4. Bryan Clark defeated Mr. Hughes in a singles match when Hughes got himself intentionally disqualified following the blatant use of a chair at ringside.
  5. More Headaches for Bryan Clark: The match result was barely in the books when things took a sharp turn for Bryan Clark. Mr. Hughes was joined by Steven Regal, and together, they unleashed a beatdown on Clark. The crowd erupted in boos as the two-on-one assault dragged on, with Bryan Clark unable to defend himself against the onslaught. Before leaving, some money was publicly exchanged between Regal and Hughes.
  6. York Foundation Promo: Backstage, Alexandra York said that the tag division was scheduled for liquidation, as the York Foundation’s Taylor Made Man and Maxwell “The Merger” Nash were ready to make a huge impact on the market. Tonight, their opponents, The Canadian Connection (Carl Ouellet & Keith Hart) were on the hook for a writing checks they we’re going to be able to cash!
  7. York Foundation (Taylor Made Man & Maxwell “The Merger” Nash) w/ Alexandra York defeated The Canadian Connection (Carl Ouellet & Keith Hart) in a tag team match when Nash pinned Hart following a Liquidation Powerbomb.
  8. The “Ravishing” Vacation Continues: Another video package aired this week that featured the WCW United States Champion, “Ravishing” Rick Rude and his valet, Madusa, were seen laying out on a beach in the Florida Keys. Rude said that he was still enjoying his time away from all those smelly arenas and the so-called wrestling fans. Rude said that he would continue to soak up the sun’s rays because life is good when you’re the U.S. Champion!
  9. Brian Pillman defeated Booker T w/ Stevie Ray in a singles match when Pillman pinned Booker following a Top Rope Dropkick.
  10. Brian Pillman Post-Match Interview: Missy Hyatt caught up with Brian Pillman quickly because she said Pillman told her he had some thoughts to get off his chest. Pillman explained that since he has been back in the fold the last couple of weeks, he has been sick and tired of hearing about how much “Ravishing” Rick Rude was enjoying being away from WCW. Pillman explained that when you’re a champion, you show up, you give the company your very best, and you leave everything you’ve got in the ring… according to Pillman, Rude hasn’t done that as WCW United States Champion. Pillman said that while Rude sits on a beach somewhere in the Sunshine State, he’d be here, kicking butt week in and week out. Just like a real championship-worthy talent is supposed to.
  11. Chris Benoit defeated Larry Zbyszko w/ Paul E. Dangerously in a singles match for the WCW Television Championship when Benoit forced Zbyszko to pass out with a Crossface. Chris Benoit was able to successfully retain the WCW Television Championship.
  12. Paul E. Pays: After defeated Larry Zbyszko, Chris Beoit ducked a surprise attack attempt from Paul E. Dangerously, who ran into the ring behind him. For his continued trouble, Benoit was able to easily lock Dangerously into a Crossface submission for a few seconds! The crowd exploded as Dangerously tapped wildy in pain. “Stunning” Steve Austin entered and slid in to save his manager, but the damage was done and Benoit headed out. Commentary suggested that Benoit stuck it to The Dangerous Alliance in a big way tonight!
  13. Vader Waits No Longer: Harley Race and Big Van Vader were backstage to cut a frustrated promo on the unfair treatment Vader has experienced in 1992. He has been undervalued, underpaid, under booked, and under appreciated for far too long in WCW… and that was all coming to a stop now! Next week, Race said that Vader would be fully expecting a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match against Sting. If the match wasn’t made, there would be grave consequences and Harley said that he couldn’t be held responsible for any damages Vader would cause!
  14. Kevin Sullivan w/ Gary Hart and Barry Windham w/ Kendall Windham fought to a draw following a double count-out.
  15. Sting and Ron Simmons Show No Fear: As Kevin Sullivan and Barry Windham were counted out and the official called for the bell, Matt Borne, Cactus Jack, and Sabu descended on both Kendall and Barry Windham like a pack of wolves. The four-on-two attack was ruthless as the Faces of Fear got the better of the Windhams. Sting and Ron Simmons sprinted down the ramp to a massive pop and the save was fast and physical. Sting threw fists at Cactus Jack and landed a Stinger Splash on Kevin Sullivan in the corner. Ron Simmons backed him up by taking care of Matt Borne and Sabu. The ring was cleared in seconds and Hart’s Faces of Fear regrouped on the outside as the show came to a close.

WCW: IN THE NEWS

03/02/92 – 03/08/92

  • Oliver Humperdink and WCW have mutually parted ways. (03/03)
  • Brian Pillman’s 30 day suspension has been served and will be lifted immediately, according to reports. (03/04)
  • It is rumored that “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes has been requested to expand his role with WCW backstage as one of the company’s main match agents moving forward. As a commentator and on-air personality, Rhodes will have his hands more than full with any additional duties backstage. No solid confirmation yet, but if Rhodes accepts, he would be joining agents Mike Graham, Jody Hamilton, and Harley Race. (03/05)
