BREAKDOWN & REVIEW
- Bill Mercer once again welcomed us to The Sportatorium for another exciting night of action. Mercer covered our featured matches of the evening and threw to commercial.
- Mr. Ebony vs, Mike Reed: Our opening contest was set for one fall to a finish with a ten minute time limit. Reed attempted to kick us off with a full nelson, but Ebony was having none of it and got right to work on Reed. Overhand strikes and a bodyslam put Reed down in a hurry. Ebony threw Reed out to the floor and back inside, he came off the second rope with an elbow to Reed’s head. Ebony put the boots to Reed, stuck him with a back bodydrop, and then swung Reed around in a full nelson of his own. The referee called for the bell quickly, as Reed was unable to continue. After the bout, Mr. Ebony flexed around the ring before exiting.
- Ebony has a nice finish and this squash made him look formittable. Reed’s attempts to fight back were appreciated, but pretty weak. All things considered, it was a solid squash for the big man. Star from me.
- Back from commercial, Bill Mercer was standing at ringside for an interview with Michael Hayes and Buddy Roberts. Michael Hayes said The Freebirds aren’t in not stinkin’ slump. He put all tag teams in progessional wrestling on notice. He then addressed Fritz Von Erich said that if he really loved his sons, they better not show for the big six-man tag team rematch next week! Buddy Roberts said that when they catch up to the Von Erichs, they’re going to show everybody wants The Freebirds on their card!
- Terry Gordy’s absence has been definitely felt the last couple of episodes. That said, I like a fired up Hayes and Roberts cutting a angered promo… and supposedly, we’re getting the big Von Erich / Freebird rematch next week? We’ll see if that ends up officially announced.
- José Lothario & “Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. The Mongol & Gran Marcus II: This tag team match was set for one fall, ten minutes for a limit. I fully expected a clean win for the babyface team here, but we’ll see. The Mongol and Chris Adams kicked things off with Adams staying a step ahead of the bigger man with some leapfrogs and clothesline for a near fall. Marcus II ran in and Lothario cut him off and all four men were in the ring doing battle. The babyfaces were thrown into each other, but instead of colliding, they locked elbows and nailed one heel each with a strike that sent both bad guys out to the floor on seperate sides of the ring. One The Mongol recovered, he laid some heavy strikes on Adams and Marcus II was tagged in next to get in some offense. The Mongol was back in and did more damage to “The Gentleman” with a chinlock. Marcus II was in again and further stretched out Adams and at this point he really needed a hot tag to Lothario. The heels kept control with frequent tags while keeping the ring cut off. Finally, Lothario got the tag and laid in some punches on The Mongol. Lothario was then cooled off with a standing front facelock. I was shocked to see how well The Mongol and Gran Marcus II were working together at this point. After suffering another beatdown, Adams was able to get a flurry of offense in on Marcus II, including a big Super Kick that sent the masked man out to the floor. Lothario was in next and landed a nice stomp onto Marcus II from the top rope! He locked in a sleeper hold on The Mongol once he ran in and we were quickly down to the last minute or so of the time limit. The limit would expire, ending the match in a draw officially. While the bell rang, The Mongol and Gran Marcus II attempted to double-team Adams in the ring, but he was able to fight the two men off and Adams and Lothario ended up standing tall in the end.
- This was an okay match, with nothing really standing out. I don’t think this match did anybody any major favors, except for maybe the teamwork displayed between Marcus II and The Mongol. Star and a half from me… nothing really too much to see here, with a waste of Chris Adams being the worst part.
- Buddy Roberts vs. “Iceman” King Parsons: Our next match was a featured one, one fall, with a forty-five minute time limit. The crowd was hot for this one and seemed excited for these guys to lock horns in singles action again finally. As the bell rang, Roberts immediately bailed to the floor to stall. The two men shadow-boxed around the ring and Parsons went for Roberts’ headgear, which again sent Buddy out to the floor to stall. Parsons was all over the headgear, trying anything to pull it off again just like Bruiser Brody did a few weeks ago. A lot of stall in this one, with Buddy really trying to avoid Parsons, as he kept bailing to the floor for a powder. Parsons got a few more good punches in, snapmared Buddy over, and again went for the headgear. Parsons was in clear control at this point, pulling Buddy up and out of a corner, hitting big punches, and dancing around for the fans. Buddy tried to blatantly choke “Iceman” under the bottom rope, so he was forced to break the hold. After Buddy bailed out again, Parsons brought him in the hard way to continue the beating. Roberts then failed to come off the top rope onto “Iceman”, being met with a punch to the gut instead. Parsons was then throw out of the ring through the middle rope, allowing Buddy some breathing room. You could tell the crowd’s interest in this one was starting to die a bit at this point with the lack of real action. An inside cradle roll up pin ended with one, with “Iceman” King Parsons getting the better of Roberts. After the match, Parsons nearly got the wig from Roberts, but once again, Roberts was able to slide out and away from his opponent.
- This one was plodding, slow, and rather boring… which sucked because it shouldn’t have been! There is good heat with this feud, so I’m surprised that is rematch wasn’t more exciting or action-focused. Stalling and avoidance was the name of the game, then throw in the cheap win for King Parsons, and I’m not sure what they were going for in this one. DUD.
- Kerry Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes: Our main event tonight was scheduled for one fall to a finish, sixty minutes for a limit. Been awhile since we saw Kerry in a singles match, especially with such a capable opponent in Michael Hayes. The two men circled, both being very cautious of the other. Some mat wrestling got underway, with Michael ending up a little twisted up and left stumbling. Next thing you know, Hayes was on the outside strutting and stalling. Chants of “Hayes is a queer!” broke out in the arena, a new one from the fans of Dallas. A standing side headlock quieted the chant as Hayes really wrenched it down on Kerry. Kerry was able to rally with a set of arm drags, a scoop slam, and some arm work on the mat. Back up, Hayes stuck Kerry with a back elbow. Hayes then slapped on a tight chinlock that had Kerry grounded for a solid minute or two. “The Modern Day Warrior” was finally able to work his way back up and slap on an Iron Claw, but it wouldn’t last. He dumped Kerry through the second rope out to the floor and again strutted around the ring. Back in the ring, these two traded strikes, with Kerry using his discus punch and Hayes using an eye rake. After a few more blows traded back and forth, Hayes thought he had the better of Kerry, but Hayes was then taken by surprise with a school boy style roll up! Kerry got the three count and without a missed beat, Hayes continued his assault. A piledriver put Kerry down bigtime and Hayes exited.
- Another loss for The Fabulous Freebirds! This was a much better match than the matches prior tonight, with Kerry and Hayes putting in some solid work. This was a perfectly worked match as Kerry was left fighting from underneath for most of it, which is always best for him! All things considered, we had a competitive match, no run-ins, and a somewhat decisive victory for Kerry. This was a battle between arguably the promotion’s biggest bad guy and their biggest good guy and I think for a television match, it delivered. Two and a half stars from me.
- After the match, we again joined Bill Mercer in the commentary booth for the show’s wrap up. He mentioned that Hayes did end up getting the last laugh on Kerry with the post-match piledriver.
- “Gentleman” Chris Adams then joined Bill Mercer for a quick interview in the commentary booth. Mercer asked about his business with The Mongol. Adams reiterated that the reason he came to Dallas in the first place, was because of The Mongol. Their feud is far from over and he is going to get The Mongol one and for all. Mercer then asked Adams’ thoughts on what happened after the main event tonight to which Adams said that kind of thing makes him sick. It should be stopped and he will do what he can to help stop that sort of thing. Adams said he also is sick of and hates Jimmy Garvin and it is a shame the way Kevin lost the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship. If he has any say in it, Adams said he couldn’t wait to get his hands on Garvin himself!
- This good guy schtick is laid on pretty thick with Chris Adams lately… it is almost getting to be too much. Let him do his talking in the ring! We already have plenty to cheer for there. I just feel like all these extra segments and interviews are becoming redundant.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Tonight was a rough episode, especially following the high that was last week! Action was super disappointing and there were really no strong segments to speak of. Also, we got no inclining of what is really going to happen next week, match or storyline wise with anything. To me, besides maybe the main event that was decent, this week felt a bit like a throwaway. Here’s to hoping next week we’re back on track!
See you all then!
