World Championship Wrestling presents Power Hour
Date: 9/19/1992
Matches:
1.) The Barbarian defeated Larry Santo
2.) Vader defeated Jobber
3.) Scotty Flamingo defeated Jimmy Garvin
4.) WCW United States Champion Rick Rude defeated Van Hammer
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) The Barbarian won his enhancement match in short order following a big boot.
2.) We see footage from the Clash of the Champions ten days ago where Jake Roberts pinned Sting to win an elimination tag match after hitting a DDT.
3.) Vader won his enhancement match following a powerbomb.
4.) Teddy Long does a profile on Jake Roberts, who made his debut on August 2nd. We see footage of Roberts debut attacking Sting on WCW Worldwide. Teddy wonders when will it stop with Jake Roberts and believes it will be at Halloween Havoc, but it also could be the beginning.
5.) The mat classic is clips of a match between Brian Lee and Tom Zenk from Clash of the Champions on November 20th, 1990.
6.) Jim Ross hosts the Halloween Havoc Control Center. WCW World Champion Ron Simmons will defend against The Barbarian. Cactus Jack, who is wearing a vest while shirtless, cuts a promo about taking the best from Simmons. Cactus believes the Barbarian is going to strip Simmons of everything he’s earned. WCW United States Champion Rick Rude cuts a promo on Masahiro Chono saying he has a few surprises for Chono at Havoc. Rude says they will show Chono the tricks, and take home the big treat (NWA title). Sting cuts a promo saying he can’t wait to get his hands on Jake Roberts. Roberts says Baltimore was just a small taste of what Sting is going to experience.
7.) Scotty Flamingo countered a swinging neckbreaker attempt by holding the ropes and pinned Garvin by using the ropes for leverage. It was clear that the fans did not care for this at all.
8.) Missy Does The Mail hosted by Missy Hyatt is up next. Hyatt talks about the Steiner Brothers getting a rematch against Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton on Saturday Night. We see footage of Michael Hayes being revealed as being associated with Anderson and Eaton at the Clash. Arn and Eaton are now the number one contenders for the tag titles since they defeated the Steiner Brothers.
9.) Rude is wearing plain red trunks, which seems a bit odd since he usually has colorful gear on. Hammer puts a headlock on Rude, but Hammer keeps control for a bit. Rude backs Hammer against the ropes and there’s a clean break. Hammer gets the crowd behind him as Rude regroups in the corner. Hammer blocks a few strikes and decks Rude. Rude avoids a clothesline to kick Hammer and spikes Hammer with a piledriver for a two count. Rude delivers a swinging neckbreaker for a one count and keeps Hammer on the mat with a sleeper. Hammer elbows Rude to break free in the corner. Rude knee strikes Hammer in the corner. Rude leaps off the middle rope and axe handles Hammer for a near fall. Rude goes back with a chin lock on the mat. Hammer elbows free from Rude. Rude puts a sleeper on Hammer, but Hammer breaks free with a jawbreaker. Hammer tries for a slam, but Rude avoids it. Hammer atomic drops Rude and hits a press slam followed by a leg drop for a near fall. Hammer clotheslines Rude in the corner. Hammer misses a splash in the corner and Rude hits the Rude Awakening for the win. (*1/2. Hammer didn’t come across as a serious threat here, and action wise this was rather dull. I’m telling myself that Rude wearing plain gear meant he didn’t even care enough about Hammer to wear his proper attire that I’m use to seeing.)
Final Thoughts:
Barbarian is the number one contender, and I don’t totally hate this. He’s been built up well on TV and has gotten pins on notable workers. Havoc is shaping up to look fairly well on paper. This weeks episode was a bit dull, though.
Thanks for reading.
