BREAKDOWN & REVIEW
- Bill Mercer welcomed us to the famous Sportatorium and he announced that there had been a breakup between Sunshine and her valet! Trouble in the Garvin camp! Plus, he covered our Country Whipping match that’ll head up the show tonight.
- So, that’s crazy. This valet for Sunshine just debuted and is already causing problems?! I smell a split a’coming…
- Mike Reed vs. Super Destroyer II: Our opening contest was set for one fall to a finish, fifteen minute time limit. Destroyer was accompanied by Super Destroyer I and Skandor Akbar… so, apparently, he’ll be associated with Devastation Inc.? Also, it seems as though the Sportatorium had upgraded their overhead lights, as the area lighting appeared much more blue than its typical orange tint. Just something I happened to notice. Anyway, the bell rang for this one and we were off to witness the debut of Super Destroyer II, or ‘Super D’ as Mercer kept calling him on commentary. Some clubs to the chest had Reed on the defense right out of the gate. A dropkick only stumbled the masked man as he continued his work with strikes on poor Mike Reed. A running kitchen sink put Reed down hard. On commentary, Bill Mercer mentioned that it would be King Parsons taking on a Super Destroyer next week. Reed was still being put down hard, now with a scoop slam and a falling standing headbutt. A running back elbow shuddered Reed, followed by a face scrub with the laces of Super Destroyer II’s boots. Shockingly, on commentary, Bill Mercer also mentioned that we’d be seeing the debut of Mike Von Erich at Thanksgiving Star Wars coming up… after being challenged by Buddy Roberts of The Fabulous Freebirds! Huge announcement there. Back in the ring, Reed fired up and started getting some strikes in, but then he ran into a bug boot when following Destroyer into a corner. A suplex off the second rope put Reed away for the three count.
- I’ll be honest, Super Destroyer II didn’t look all that bad here! He brutalized Mike Reed, but was hitting a nice balance of strikes AND power moves. Good showing and a proper squash, as Reed got in virtually nothing. A cool finish for Destroyer here, as well! A star and a half from me!
- Up next, we met Bill Mercer in the commentary booth where he was preparing to throw to footage of the problems that have come to the surface in the Garvin camp recently. We then cut to some footage where a match in progress had Jimmy Garvin being elbowed out of the ring by Johnny Mantell. Once back in, Sunshine’s valet tried to help Garvin by tripping Mantell up under the bottom rope. Instead, she inadvertently helped Mantell swing the momentum in the fall and end up on top of Garvin to get a three count! Sunshine was beside herself, as she yelled at the assistant. Apparently, this had cost Garvin the WCCW Television Championship here! Then, out of nowhere, Sunshine and the assistant went full cat fight! AS they brawled, shockingly, Garvin held Sunshine up so the assistant could clobber her! Then, my jaw dropped has Garvin shoved Sunshine to the mat in favor of her valet. In a measure of defiance, Sunshine reared back and slapped Garvin hard. In a fit of rage, Garvin grabbed a mic and told Sunshine that was through, that she was headed back to the other side of the tracks where he found her. No women was going to hit him and get away with it! The crowd completely cheered on Sunshine and this portion of the segment ended.
- Holy crap. What a set of developments here… not only are Garvin and Sunshine done, but he chose the valet over her and there was a pull apart between these two ladies! This put Sunshine over huge as a new babyface and only made Garvin look even worse than he already did. Awesome stuff here, even though I’m really going to miss that original pairing.
- A second half of this presentation was a press conference held by Sunshine in regards to the situation, as explained briefly by Bill Mercer. We then were shown the footage of this conference, as a booth waiting for Sunshine with two microphones attached. A gentleman stepped in and thanked the press for being here. He said he was here to present a statement from Sunshine, to which she would be reading. Afterward, he mentioned that there would be no questions taken. Sunshine then stepped into frame and started her statement. She said that everybody knows what happened and everybody also knows how Jimmy Garvin and that sorry-excuse-for-a-women dumped her. She promised Jimmy Garvin wouldn’t be getting away with what happened, especially after all she had done for him. That valet was supposed to be a gift for her, but the only thing she was good for is getting in between them! She also said that she took all the match tapes and medical history she could find with her when she left… and don’t come looking for her to get them back because it was all at Chris Adams’ house! She hopes that Adams will be able to use them to beat Garvin at the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship match coming up and she promised to be there to see it. As far as that TRAMP, if she gets near Sunshine again, there’s going to be a war. If it wasn’t for Sunshine, Garvin wouldn’t be the American Heavyweight Champion… he probably wouldn’t be anything! She also said that if the chance comes and she can get close enough, she is going to scratch Jimmy’s eyes out. As far as his little tramp, she’ll pull every hair out of her head and her clothes right off to expose what she really is to everybody. She does know why Jimmy has done this to her… she turned her into something totally different because she loved him. Without finishing her statement, she rushed away and the gentleman stepped back in to call off the rest of the press conference.
- Ummmm, Sunshine killed it here. She conveyed every emotion needed, anger, resentment, guilt, sadness, pain, and disappointment. Awesome, awesome stuff from Sunshine here. If things keep up like this, this may be the story of all stories heading into Thanksgiving Star Wars!
- Finally, to close out this monumental segment, it was time to hear from Jimmy Garvin. Bill Mercer then threw to a tape of himself standing outside Garvin’s gate at his assumed to be house. Mercer said nobody has heard from Jimmy Garvin so Mercer was able to track down where Jimmy Garvin had been living. The valet then answered the door in nothing but a button down! She asked what Mercer wanted and asked why everybody couldn’t just leave him alone before slamming the door in Mercer’s face. Jimmy Garvin then threw the door open and said that he couldn’t believe Mercer was at his house! Garvin said he had nothing to say to Bill Mercer, he wasn’t giving any interview. Mercer brought up the health records and videotapes Sunshine mentioned and Garvin said that she stole those tapes out of his office! Garvin tried to block the camera with his hand and promised that Sunshine wasn’t going to get away with this. The valet then showed back up in the doorway and said that Sunshine better stay away from her, too! Garvin tried to calm her down as she again slammed the door in Bill Mercer’s face to end the segment.
- Jimmy Garvin is so good, man. The way he played this was just as slimy as you’d expect. When he swings the door open at first and couldn’t believe Mercer was standing there with a camera, I couldn’t help but smile. This whole segment, all three parts, was absolutely awesome… a next level being reach by World Class and its production. Hats off to all involved.
- “Iceman” King Parsons vs. Tonga John: Our next match was set for one fall, fifteen minutes for a limit. This would mark the debut of Tonga John here. Some chain wrestling ensued before Parsons hit a dropkick on his opponent that sent him out of the ring. On commentary, Mercer mentioned the match coming up between Michael Hayes and Kerry Von Erich, with the loser having to leave Texas for a year, of course taking place at Thanksgiving Star Wars. In the ring, Parsons was working over a standing side headlock that turned into a seated side headlock. Then it was “Iceman” in trouble, as he was locked into a bearhug. Mercer then announced that officially, it would “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin against “Gentleman” Chris Adams for the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship at Thanksgiving Star Wars. Parsons fought back into the match here with some heavy chops and a headbutt. Another dropkick found its mark on Tonga John, followed by a surprise Butt-Butt running hip attack that finished off Tonga John!
- Nothing special at all here, as this match was basically used to promote other things on commentary. Parsons seemed to have his hands full with Tonga John here, but was obviously able to squeak out the victory in the end. I do feel as though since the summer, the quality of Parsons’ matches has dipped a bit. I’m not sure if the office is letting him down, or if Parsons is slowly cooling himself down. He does appear to have gained a bit of weight over the last few months, so I’m not sure. Anyway, this match was a dud. Skippable.
- Back from commercial, Bill Mercer welcomed Fritz Von Erich back to the commentary booth for a special announcement in a pre-taped segment. Fritz said that despite him being in the background for a very long time, he has been very much aware of what has been going on. He was here to present a tape of something that he felt was important to discuss, as it concerned his son, Mike, at an event held in Fort Worth. Also, he wanted to formally announce that his son, Kerry Von Erich, would in fact be doing battle with that ‘moron’ Michael Hayes and the loser would indeed be banned from wrestling in the state of Texas for one year. We then went to the video footage that Fritz brought. It started with Kerry and Mike in the ring being interviewed by Marc Lowrance. Kerry said the forth Von Erich was getting ready to start wrestling. He had a gift for Mike that came from his mother, stitched with love. It was lucky ring jacket and one he has travelled up and down the country with. Kerry gave Mike the jacket, hugged him, and exited. Lowrance then asked Mike about him debuting, his amateur background, and how he feels about stepping into the ring soon. Mike put his brothers over as great amateur wrestlers in their own right and said that he’s been working really hard around the United States. Places like North Dakota, New York, St. Louis, and other places working on his skills. Mike said that he’s been working for over two years with his brothers, as suddenly Michael Hayes stormed to ringside. Lowrance asked if Hayes would exit so the interview could continue. Instead, Hayes jumped into the ring and got on the microphone to say that he was sick of hearing about this ‘cute little jacket’ given to ‘cute little Mike’ by ‘cute little Kerry’! Hayes said that he could care less as he snatched the jacket away from Mike and torn it in half. At first, Mike stood there motionless, but as Hayes turned his back, Mike jumped up on him and slapped on a sleeper hold. The crowd exploded as Mike got some punches in on Hayes and the two rolled around. Mike took a hard bump out to the floor as Kerry rushed back down to ringside to help Mike. Kerry and Mike beat Hayes down until Buddy Roberts came down to make the save. His time was brief, as Mike arm dragged him and sent him out through the second rope to the floor! Trying to get back in, Buddy then ate a dropkick from Mike and instead collected Michael Hayes to escape the Von Erichs. That finished the tape and we went back to Fritz and Bill. Fritz said that because of what we just saw, this is where things have ended up with these Freebirds. Everything started back when Terry Gordy slammed the cage door on Kerry’s head and gave him a concussion. Now, they’re starting problems with his nineteen-year-old son, Mike! He isn’t going to sit idly by while all this takes place on television. He explained the rules of this upcoming match between Kerry and Hayes and knows that Hayes thinks he has something up his sleeve. Fritz will be in the building that night, he has been in the background watching long enough, he will now be right out front to watch first-hand. If Hayes thinks he has a plan, he better think twice. Also, Mike will be making his debut there as well. Fritz put over the card he has seen for the nigh thus far and the segment concluded.
- Wow. More monumental developments here leading into Thanksgiving Star Wars coming up! The debut of Mike Von Erich, the Loser Leaves Texas match, and the story between The Freebirds and Von Erichs covered here. Fritz basically saying that his presence will be felt during that match makes me think that he’s either going to be in Kerry’s corner, or be some sort of special enforcer on the outside? Either way, that makes that match even more important! This Star Wars card is starting to feel like the biggest ever presented by World Class up to this point.
- Kevin & Kerry Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy: Our main event was set for one fall to a finish, sixty minutes to a finish, and would be contested under Country Whipping Match rules. Each man would have a leather strap attached to them, with those being the legal objects to use on their opponents! Hayes and Gordy were refusing to take their shirts off here, delaying the start of this one, with the straps not even being handed out yet. Finally, Kerry snapped and tore the shirt off Michael Hayes and things went south quickly! The straps were snatched and used against Gordy and Hayes, sending them bailing to the floor as the crowd went nuts. All the straps were handed out and all four men duked it out in the ring. Hayes and Kerry traded strap lashes and Gordy and Kevin went at it. David Manning got on the house mic and demanded that only two men be in the ring at a time, trying to regain some order. It was Kerry and Michael to kick things off, as both swung their belts wildly. Gordy then tagged in and started TATTOOING Kerry with the belt big time. Kevin tagged in and got going on Gordy, sending him into the corner hard and getting some cracks of a whip on him. The heels again collected themselves on the floor. Back in the ring, Gordy lost his strap and Kevin took advantage with his. Gordy eventually got his belt back and then it was Hayes back in to lay in some whips on Kevin’s back. Gordy and Hayes used a strap to hit a double clothesline on Kevin, finally locking in the momentum on their side for the moment. Kerry got a got tag in and came in with both he and Kevin’s straps! As Kerry got going, all four men were in the ring going nuts again. Kerry ended up getting the Oriental Spike while Kevin was sent into the ringpost head-first from the apron. Back in, Kevin was illegally thrown out to the floor over the tope rope. After a few moments more of brawling, the bell sounded and the match was officially thrown out. The fight continued however as all four men went at it. Gordy was sent up and over the top rope by Kevin and it was Hayes who was left to be beaten down by Kerry and Kevin. Buddy Roberts appeared to help pull Hayes from the ring and the three Freebirds hightailed it out of the arena! The Von Erichs were determined the winners, due to disqualification when he was thrown out over the top rope.
- This was chaos… but the best kind of chaos, as this feud somehow continues to heat up. These Country Whippin’ Matches are great, especially when the guys really really lay it in like they were here tonight. This was a perfect match to cap the night off and despite us not getting much of a match at all, it was a fun brawl. Two and a half stars from me!
- Back from commercial, Bill Mercer met Kerry and Kevin Von Erich ringside to close out the show. As Bill closed out the show, Kerry was saying there’d be no escape next time for Michael Hayes! He was going to get him! Kevin ushered Kerry away as we faded to black.
- Oddly, I think I heard Kerry mention a cage? Could their Loser Leaves Texas match be inside a steel cage!? That would just put things right over the top!
FINAL THOUGHTS
This was one of the most fun and important weekly shows for World Class that I can think of in recent memory. We got several matches for WCCW Thanksgiving Star Wars announced (Michael Hayes vs. Kerry Von Erich, Mike Von Erich vs. Buddy Roberts, Jimmy Garvin vs. Chris Adams, etc.), saw the breakup of Garvin and Sunshine, heard from Fritz Von Erich himself, got the debut of a new team, heard from Mike Von Erich for the first time, and had a classic Freebirds / Von Erichs brawl to close out the night. They have kicked the promotion of Thanksgiving Star Wars into high gear, with it only being a roughly two weeks away at this point. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the card ends up being, not to mention where we go from here next week!
See you all then!
