One of my best pals, and longtime Wrestling Recaps contributor, Austin Skinner has been a fan of WCCW, World Class Championship Wrestling, for a long time. While Austin and others would mock my borderline obsession with Smoky Mountain Wrestling a few years ago, Austin will sing the praises of WCCW. I wish I could sit here and say I’d mock him, but frankly, I’m sure it’s better than SMW. I’ve literally never watched anything WCCW related. In the past, I have wanted to, but I simply never took the time to watch the footage. Austin has been doing WCCW reviews for the site and can be found HERE.
With the recent release and success of the Iron Claw the interest in WCCW has popped up again. I’m not going to get into TV reviews and such because that’s Austin’s lane and I jump around far too many promotions as it is. This series will be me reviewing available matches or often talked about matches within a rivalry. It is different than the Reliving A Feud series since that series only focuses on the story behind the rivalry.
The first rivalry I decided to check out is between Kerry Von Erich and Ric Flair over the NWA World Championship in the early 1980s. I don’t know how many times I’ve opened up YouTube and a match of theirs is in my suggestions, but I haven’t watched it. That ends with this series. There are a lot of matches between available and I’m looking forward to seeing how the rivalry evolves over time.

Kerry getting essentially screwed over should make for his eventual title win much more rewarding for the crowd. The action was decent here, but nothing overly memorable or worthwhile. The crowd is electric and makes the match come across better than it likely is for me.)

The finish is a bit bizarre for me. I understand needing to be creative to keep the title on Flair and not job out Kerry, but to do it in this manner didn’t come across as a satisfying end to the match that took place on Christmas for goodness sake. This had a big match feel and the crowd was electric throughout the entire time. I honestly would have expected Kerry to win the title, but Hayes and Gordy turning ended up being a fantastic business decision for WCCW. I still can’t get over the finish to the match, though. It’s the only thing that bugs me. I loved how this came across as a true fight inside a cage as they brawled and fought well together. Kerry jobbing after the cage door shot would have been more satisfying.)

It’s clearly a big moment for the Von Erich’s to finally win the NWA World Championship. The finish was not expected by me to end in the manner that it did. Kerry winning with a backslide almost comes across as flukey instead of a convincing win for Kerry. Coming off the cage match from over a year ago, I was expecting a longer bout and more drama attached to it. Of course the context of David Von Erich passing away prior to the show and being a memorial show for him is important to note.)

It was a bit slower than the other matches, but I’m wondering if it was because it took place in Japan instead of WCCW. There wasn’t much excitement action wise here. The atmosphere between these two is much better and noticeable in front of the Texas crowd. I don’t even want to know what the Texas crowd would have done if Kerry lost the title in front of them after just a couple of weeks holding the title.)

They absolutely have a formula that they seemingly stick to when they are wrestling in WCCW. The finish is lame, though. I feel like the crowd energy was a little lower compared to their other matches. With the constant non-finishes for Kerry against Flair, I’m wondering if the crowd became disinterested in the chase by Kerry for the title. It’s a decent match, but nothing overly memorable by any means.)

The finish doesn’t bother me as it’s a far less convoluted finish than they’ve done in the past. The crowd ate up the closing minutes and I enjoyed the action. They ran their formula well here and there wasn’t much of a lull despite the match being an hour, or 45-minutes shown on TV.)
