I thought that was a good opening tag match with the Headbangers showing some fun offense and working well. Flanagan provided some high flying offense to pop the crowd, as well. Michaels had a limited role, but they did a fine job as a thrown together team against an established duo.)
Randy Hales cuts a promo before the next match saying he made a mistake last time by arriving by himself and he got jumped. Hales brought the best tag team, PG-13 with him this time and they’ll prove the USWA is the best.

Hales gets on the apron to distract the referee. Wolfie whacks Fulton with a hub cap allowing Ice to pin Fulton for the win. (*1/2. Hales is not a good manager. He didn’t do much of anything and came across awkward with his presence at ringside. The action was rather basic, but not bad. Fulton had some good fire for his moments in the ring. I tend to enjoy PG-13 whenever I see them and that continued here, as well.)
Mark Curtis, SMW referee, came out to be the referee for the next match and got one of the biggest pops on the show thus far. The fans in Tennessee love Mark Curtis, as they should.

Cornette whacks Armstrong with the tennis racket, but Bob no sells it and Cornette begs off. Punisher whacks Armstrong with something out of his jeans and pins Armstrong for a major victory. (*. There isn’t much to this match action wise since Bob is very limited at this point in his career. However, using the interference and making the match a bit chaotic certainly helped the match. This is a major win for Punisher even if it wasn’t clean. Punisher showed some good athletic ability, too. The top rope leg drop is an impressive sight considering his size.)
At this point they setup for the opening of their TV show as footage is going to be shown on SMW TV. We get a good shot of the audience and it looks like they got a good crowd for the event as it’s a reported 5,000 in attendance.

However, Snow rolls through and grabs a handful of tights to pin Jannetty and win the title! (**. I think it’s safe to say the match didn’t need to go nearly a half hour. There were a few good spots, but it’s a mostly slow match aside from the couple of high spots they put in there. If they cut 6-8 minutes out if the match and kept it around 15-17 minutes it’s probably a lot better. Judging by other reviews I’ve seen for the match, I’m on the lower end of the rating as others have this at ***1/4 or higher. It just didn’t connect with me to that level.)
Fifth Contest: NWA World Champion Dan Severn vs. Bobby Blaze: Severn takes Blaze down with a fireman’s carry, but doesn’t followup. Severn and Blaze trade holds on the mat leading to a standoff. Severn backs Blaze against the ropes and eventually hits a belly to belly suplex. Severn tries to take Blaze down, but Blaze delivers a few elbow strikes. Blaze tosses Severn with a suplex and hits a bridging suplex, but Severn avoids a cover. Blaze nails Severn with a clothesline. It felt like a filler match for the most part.)

After the match, Stomper is double teamed until Bradley makes the save with a chain and they continue to brawl to end the segment. (*. As expected, there wasn’t much to this action wise and the finish is pretty cheap for the most part. These weak finishes seem to only fly in the Southern area.)

Armstrong runs into an elbow in the corner and Haynes nails Armstrong with a big boot. It’s a bit interesting that Armstrong won the title despite putting down the USWA and acts as if he’s cherishing the moment. The finish was nicely done as Armstrong avoided a DQ finish to surprise Haynes with the finish and pin.)

Unabomb pummels Taker with strikes, but Taker hits a leaping clothesline. Taker grabs Unabomb and hits the chokeslam. Taker spikes Unabomb with a tombstone to win the match. (*. If you’re expecting some kind of competitive match that simply didn’t happen here. Unabomb is kind of presented as a monster in SMW, but that wasn’t the case here against Taker. It really diminished the perception of Unabomb, and that’s taking into consideration that it’s Undertaker who is a major star. It’s worth noting that Unabomb didn’t appear on SMW again as he finished up in eight days before being full-time with WWF so it’s not damaging to SMW long-term. It’s the first of many matches between these two with Unabomb becoming Kane, and the action becomes much better over the years.)
Bob Armstrong and Robert Gibson come out before the next match with Armstrong announcing that there’s an issue between Ricky Morton’s girlfriend and Tracy Smothers girlfriend. Thus, there is going to be a legal issue causing the Rock ’n’ Roll Express will not be able to compete tonight. Gibson cuts a promo about Morton not being there to challenge for the tag titles. The table didn’t break but rather they plopped through a section of it. Del Ray is left alone in the ring, but Prichard holds Smothers. White Boy plants Del Ray with the Bucksnort Blaster, but Cornette enters the ring with an ether rag and that knocks White Boy out. Del Ray manages to cover White Boy to win the match and win the tag titles! (***. A solid match that picked up steam after a few minutes of slow plodding action. Bodies returning to SMW was needed since the tag division was a bit depleted and losing Morton impacted them badly. The money is always the faces chasing the heels, but I can see how SMW comes across as repetitive over the years.)

Buddy nails Michaels with the corkscrew elbow drop, but the referee sees the tennis racket and knows that Cornette was involved. The referee decides to stop the count. Michaels gets up and nails Buddy with the Sweet Chin Music to win the match. (**. Buddy kind of had a visual pin on Michaels, so I can give them credit for that. The story arc of Buddy’s addiction battles that was aired on TV certainly made him a babyface and the conclusion of the match cemented Buddy’s new position in SMW as a face. It’s an average match, which you’d probably expect more from Michaels in this era.)
After the match, Shawn Michaels and Brad Armstrong fight off the Militia while Buddy Landel stood in the corner not helping his teammates and departs the ring afterward.
Final Thoughts:
I believe this is the last time SMW drew a major crowd and it’s because of the WWF guys being involved, no doubt about it. The crowd atmosphere is fantastic, but the action itself is mostly average. I’d imagine it hasn’t aged well and may have been seen as a much. better event by 1995 standards. I’ll give it a mild thumbs up as I feel as if I didn’t waste my time with it and for nearly four hour show it did fly by watching it.
Thanks for reading.
