World Championship Wrestling presents Worldwide
Date: 9/29/1996
From: Orlando, FL
Matches:
1.) WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Super Calo
2.) Alex Wright defeated Mark Starr
3.) Rick Steiner defeated Stevie Ray
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) This show is not complete as it’s not featuring a squash match involving VK Wallstreet and a main event involving the Dungeon of Doom getting a squash victory. Luckily, neither would have been heavily covered here, anyway.
2.) Mysterio gains control with a wrist lock on Calo and keeps arm control on the mat for a moment. Calo kicks Mysterio a few times and keeps wrist control. Mysterio arm drags Calo and plays to the crowd. Mysterio arm drags Calo out of a body scissors. Calo shoulder blocks Mysterio, but Mysterio drop toe holds Calo. Mysterio hits a springboard hurricanrana to send Calo to the floor. Mysterio hits a somersault dive over the top to the floor onto Calo! Calo dropkicks Mysterio on a springboard attempt. Calo plants Mysterio with a spinebuster and clotheslines Mysterio to the floor. Calo hits a slingshot senton to the floor! Calo rolls Mysterio back into the ring and taunts the crowd. Calo plants Mysterio with a tilt a whirl slam. Mysterio recovers and hits a hurricanrana to pin Calo to win the match. (***. The crowd quickly changing their reactions is a clear sign that the audience is being told when and how to react. Despite that annoying habit, this is a fine quick match. I love that they both showed off some crazy spots in a sprint of a match.)
3.) Ray works over Steiner with overhand strikes to the back and stomps on the mat. Steiner fires back with right hands in the corner, but Ray nails Steiner with an elbow strike. Rick hits a powerslam on Ray for a near fall. Steiner clotheslines Ray to the floor and plays to the crowd as Ray recovers with Sherri and Booker on the floor. Booker distracts Rick on the other side of the ring allowing Ray to cheap shot Steiner from behind. Ray clotheslines Steiner followed by a scoop slam and an elbow drop. Ray covers Steiner for a two count. Ray keeps a chin lock on Steiner, but doesn’t get a submission. Steiner avoids Ray in the corner and hits a German suplex followed by a clothesline for a two count. Booker grabs Steiner from the apron, but Ray accidentally big boots Booker. Steiner rolls Ray up and wins the match. After the match, Steiner is double teamed by Harlem Heat. Harlem Heat hit the Heat Bomb on Steiner to leave Steiner laid out. (*. A mostly uninspired match, but at least there was an actual finish and not some kind of cheap ending to it.)
Final Thoughts:
Considering it’s not a full show, because it’s missing about half of it, I’m going to say I enjoyed it because the stuff that matters is actually shown. I won’t complain about it.
Thanks for reading.
