Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Vince McMahon, Hillbilly Jim, Sgt. Slaughter, and Bobby Heenan are on the panel this week. Jim is playing guitar and they are singing Blue Christmas to mock Heenan. Heenan says Ramon and Flair are looking for Mr. Perfect. There is a seat with a blanket draped over it. Heenan doesn’t like Elvis, anyway. Heenan asks if they want to meet someone who reeks royalty. Heenan lifts up the blanket and reveals a throne style seat. Heenan introduces Jerry ‘the King” Lawler to join the panel. Lawler isn’t going to let Slaughter and Jim touch him. Lawler tells them they can sit down. Lawler asks Heenan to make sure they at least bow to him. Jim tells Lawler in order to get respect he has to give respect. Lawler tells Jim that not everyone is equal and he’s better than anyone else in the WWF.
2.) Repo Man takes Backlund down to the mat and keeps waist control, but Backlund completely counters. Repo reaches the ropes to break the hold. Repo backs Backlund into the corner. Backlund leg sweeps a charging Repo a few times and taunts Repo. Repo wants to do a test of strength. Backlund takes his time and Repo calls Backlund a chicken. Repo gets the advantage in the test of strength. Backlund manages to counter and takes Repo down with a top wrist lock. Repo regains control with strikes to the back. Repo chokes Backlund in the corner followed by strikes. Backlund ducks a clothesline and gets a bridging rollup for the win. (DUD. Honestly, there’s no way that Backlund’s style is going to survive in 1992 WWF. Backlund is a white meat babyface that doesn’t have personality and nothing he does in the ring is all that exciting. It might get a pop for a nostalgic aspect, but I don’t see this lasting long.)
3.) A vignette of Slick preaching saying he’s been sent to be a missionary in the WWF.
4.) Mean Gene hosts WWF Update and is at an empty arena. Gene says WWF World Champion Bret Hart will be defending the title in a few hours. Gene talks about how Hart had one chance to beat Ric Flair for the title and took advantage of it. Gene proceeds to go through Hart’s title history in the WWF. Gene highlights Hart’s recent title defenses. Gene puts over Hart’s work ethic. Gene notes that a lot of people don’t believe Hart can maintain the schedule. Gene introduces the interview at the restaurant that was aired on Wrestling Challenge originally.
5.) Back to the panel, Jerry Lawler is disgusted to hear WWF World Champion Bret Hart compared to him because Lawler is a real king. Vince McMahon introduces Mr. Perfect to join the show via satellite.
6.) Mr. Perfect thinks that everything went perfect at the Survivor Series. Heenan doesn’t want to look, listen or care about Mr. Perfect. Lawler says that you can see the fear in Perfect’s eyes. Lawler knows that Heenan doesn’t mad, but rather gets even. Hillbilly Jim appreciates Perfect being a standup man. Heenan takes credit for Perfect’s success. Perfect tells Heenan to never tell him to shut up. Perfect made a lot of money by going with Randy Savage. Heenan can’t believe one time making money was worth betraying his friends. Perfect is off to do bigger and better things in the WWF.
7.) Back to the panel, they talk Kamala where Lawler thinks Kamala only understands being driven in the WWF and that’s why he has handlers.
8.) Back to the panel, Vince McMahon is thrilled to have Marty Jannetty back in the WWF. Lawler talks about how much the king has to do. Lawler believes that Jannetty didn’t carry his side of the Rockers and all of it was on Shawn Michaels. Heenan thinks Michaels should have dumped Jannetty a year ago. McMahon mocks Heenan for Perfect dumping Heenan.
9.) Back to the panel, Heenan gets mad at Slaughter and Hillbilly for talking. Heenan introduces Razor Ramon to join the show via satellite. Ramon is in Miami and has a message for Mr. Perfect. Ramon is ready for the challenge and thrives for Perfect’s return. Ramon doesn’t think Perfect can prove to him that he’s perfect. Ramon tells McMahon to come down the aisle with Perfect and he’ll slap McMahon’s silly grin off his face. McMahon thinks Ramon could be surprised by the skill of Perfect. Ramon says Perfect is a good wrestler, but he’s bigger, badder and meaner. Ramon also claims he’s better looking than Perfect. Ramon isn’t scared.
10.) Blake and Owen kickoff the six man tag match with Blake backing Owen into a corner, but Owen gains control with a wrist lock. Owen kips up and puts a wrist lock on Blake. Blake fires back with right hands to stop Owen. Blake puts a headlock on Owen and shoulder blocks Owen to the mat. Owen dropkicks Blake coming off the ropes. Blake drives Owen down with a backbreaker. Blake scoop slams Owen and delivers a knee drop. Blake continues with strikes in the corner. Owen avoids a backbreaker and backslides Blake for a two count. Owen nearly wins with an inside cradle. Beau tags in and Owen drop toe holds Beau to the mat. Moon tags into the match and takes Beau over with a headlock to counter a back suplex attempt. Moon head scissors Beau to the mat and keeps a headlock on Beau. Blake enters and is met with a head scissors. Moon decks Genius off the apron. Koko enters the match and plays to the crowd. Beau works over Koko with strikes and a headbutt. Beau sends Koko into the corner, but Koko gets a rollup for a two count. Koko scoop slams Beau followed by a dropkick. Blake axe handles Koko from the top rope. Beau drives Koko down with a backbreaker and Blake hits a double under hook suplex for a near fall.
Blake delivers an axe handle to Koko’s lower back from the middle rope. Genius tags into the match and strikes Koko several times backing Koko into the corner. Koko strikes Genius causing a quick tag out to Beau. Beau clotheslines Koko coming off the ropes. Beau shoulder rams Koko on the lower back. Beau kicks Koko in the corner, but Koko tries to break free and fails. Blake enters to put a bearhug on Koko. Blake strikes Koko followed by a leg drop. Koko plants Blake with a DDT. Owen gets the hot tag and cleans house with dropkicks and backdrops. Owen heel kicks Beau. Blake powerslams Owen, but Moon gets tagged in as Genius enters the match. Moon rams Genius into the corner face first. Moon rams Genius into the corner several times. Moon heel kicks Genius in the corner. Moon boots Genius and hits a twisting crossbody off the top for the win. (**. A fine six man tag for the most part. Genius being involved made it very obvious who was going over, though.)
11.) Skinner takes Powers down to the mat with a waist lock. Powers gets a two count with a rollup. Powers gains control with a headlock, but Skinner counters with a head scissors on the mat. Powers pops up and they have a standoff. Skinner shoulder blocks Powers, but Powers hip tosses Skinner and gains headlock control. Powers delivers a rolling neck snap after faking a stomp to the face. Powers keeps a headlock on Skinner. Powers tries for a hip toss, but Skinner forearms Powers to the mat. Skinner chokes Powers over the top rope and slingshots Powers to the mat. Skinner continues with a swinging neckbreaker for a two count. Skinner misses a spear and hits the post shoulder first. Powers punches Skinner several times in the corner. Powers clotheslines Skinner and delivers a high knee lift. Powers dropkicks Skinner for a two count. Skinner sends Powers chest first into the corner. Powers sends Skinner into the corner, but Skinner avoids Powers and hits a reverse DDT for the win. (**. A rare clean win for Skinner shows how low Powers is at in the WWF universe. Powers did get an entrance and the crowd showed more interest in Powers than I expected.)
12.) The panel discusses the Undertaker and Jerry Lawler doesn’t want to be compared to Undertaker, at all. Lawler isn’t impressed by Taker and doesn’t think Nailz is impressed by Taker either. Heenan continues to claim that Nailz is an innocent man.
13.) The panel discuss Nailz and Heenan considers Nailz to be a victim. Heenan says Nailz got a parking ticket for getting his mother flowers. Lawler tells Heenan he doesn’t need to take this kind of abuse. Lawler thinks Perfect got homesick and he’s better off being allies with Randy Savage.
14.) Mr. Perfect and Razor Ramon both join the show via satellite. Ramon calls Perfect a smurf and says Perfect was cute for his return at Survivor Series. Ramon warns Perfect that he double crossed the wrong guys and he’s going to put his hands all over Perfect. Perfect will prove he’s the world’s finest in the ring against Ramon. Perfect says Ramon is oozing something, but it stinks. Heenan loses his temper saying he taught Perfect and Perfect laughs at Heenan to end the segment.
15.) Bigelow works over Santana in the corner with right hands. Santana strikes Bigelow and gets wrist control. Bigelow strikes Santana followed by a press slam attempt, but Santana lands on top. Santana strikes Bigelow and delivers a strike over the arm. Santana keeps wrist control on Bigelow. Bigelow slams Santana and misses a rolling senton. Santana kicks Bigelow several times. Santana kicks Bigelow and sunset flips Bigelow, but Bigelow sits down onto Santana’s chest. Bigelow strikes Santana over the back several times. Bigelow keeps a chin lock on Santana. Santana elbows Bigelow and ducks a clothesline. Santana gets a two count with a crossbody. Santana punches Bigelow several times. Santana avoids a splash in the corner and heads to the top rope hitting a flying clothesline for a near fall. Santana avoids a slam and tries for a rollup, but Bigelow holds the ropes. Bigelow comes off the ropes to splash Santana for the win. (**. A bit of a short bout, but a good clean win for Bigelow. Santana is a quality opponent to give Bigelow momentum to start off his latest run in WWF. The big splash may be a little weak, but Bigelow is a big guy, so it makes sense for the short-term.)
16.) The panel discuss WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels and Hillbilly Jim puts over Michaels being a tough wrestler. Slaughter notes Michaels is arrogant. Lawler says they don’t see the situation as the same. Lawler thinks Jannetty was deadweight and held Michaels back.
17.) Next week, we’ll know the main event for Royal Rumble. Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty will join the show via satellite. Jameson stumbles into the studio with a plate. Jameson insults Heenan and Lawler, but hides behind Slaughter.
Final Thoughts:
A decent episode this week for Prime Time Wrestling. Royal Rumble is mostly promoting the battle royal, but looks like Michaels/Jannetty is likely for the PPV. Perfect/Ramon could be an undercard match for Rumble if they do Flair/Hart at the Rumble. Lawler is a fresh act for the WWF and adds a different voice to the panel, which was needed for sure.
