BREAKDOWN & REVIEW
- Bill Mercer welcomed us to the fabulous Sportatorium in downtown Dallas, Texas for another exciting episode of WCCW TV. He covered tonight’s main event, a tag team bout, and gave us some history behind this one. He then introduced our replay of the evening, further setting the stage for tonight’s main event.
- The Super Destroyers (Super Destroyer I & Super Destroyer II) vs. “Iceman” King Parsons & Junkyard Dog: Our taped replay for the evening was a tag team bout from Thanksgiving Star Wars, scheduled for one fall to a finish, forty-five minutes for a limit, for the WCCW American Tag Team Championship. I love the team of Parsons and Dog, I have to saw. They’re a perfect paring. That said, it was JYD who kicked things off with Super Destroyer I. Some lock ups and shove offs got us going, ending with Dog blocking a punch and throwing a nice one of his own. A running forearm sent Destroyer I to tag out to II while Parsons also came in. A standing side headlock tied Destroyer II up for a moment. Some chain wrestling occured, with Parsons coming out ahead in a side headlock takeover. After a dropkick, Dog tagged back in to continue wearing down Destroyer II. A reverse chinlock kept the masked man grounded until JYD’s hair was pulled. Dog was able to get a headbutt on both Super Destroyers in the heel corner! He would pay as for the next few moments the heels tagged in and out and landed heavy strikes on him. Parsons got the hot tag and hit his running Butt Butt, but it was Destroyer II that came in to break up the pin. All four men then went at it, with action spilling out to the floor. Parsons was sent into the corner post, busting him open. Back in the ring, Destroyer II went right to work on the cut with fists. Elbows and punches sent Parsons flying back to his corner to tag in JYD who cleaned house with punches, back body drops, and a scoop slam. Parsons was then taken out by David Manning and other ringside officials, leaving Dog to fight off the champions by himself. Dog stayed alive with punches and headbutts. The numbers game would come into play, leaving Dog in a bad way after a double team move. Then, a taped up King Parsons came running back down to the ring to save JYD and the bell was called for as tag format completely broke down. Both teams were disqualified as the brawl continued, with Parsons cleaning house of the Super Destroyers. JYD was then up to help his partner as Parsons pulled Akbar in the hard way. Then, out of nowhere, a fireball ended up in Parsons’ face as the bell continued to ring!
- Well, this was nuts. Unfortunately, the Super Destroyers retain here, but it was exciting from bell-to-bell. Seeing Junkyard Dog is always a treat and again, I love the teaming of him and “Iceman”. This was a solid bout with momentum swinging back and forth several times, including Parsons being pulled out only to return to the match to make the save. Two stars from me!
- Back in the arena, Bill Mercer threw to a pre-taped interview in the World Class studio with Skandor Akbar and his newest team, The Super Destroyers. Mercer asked about why Akbar resorted to using a fireball on King Parsons. Akbar said that it was essentially because “Iceman” has continually gotten in his way. He wants that to be a warning to all World Class wrestlers not to interfere with his affairs. Think what you want, he’ll pull all the stops out. Fine, or no fine. Bill Mercer then asked about the slam that Kerry was able to pull of with Kamala and ultimately, if Akbar will make good on the challenge and pay Kerry Von Erich the promised $10,000. Akbar said absolutely not! First off, Kerry was not legally in the match with Kamala at the time. It was sneak attack and therefore he will not be paid. We saw footage of that next. Skandor Akbar reiterated that there will be no pay out and wanted to speak about The Super Destroyers instead. He put over their finish, the Super Plex off the top rope. He said that no other two wrestlers want to get in the ring with them, as they fear that devastating finish!
- So, I feel that maybe they’re building up The Super Destroyers to face a new team to get them over? That’s the way it seems to me. Maybe we’ll find out at Christmas Star Wars?
- “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin vs. Doug Vines: Our first bout in the Sportatorium tonight was set for one fall, ten minutes for a limit. Garvin was seconded by Precious, with Sunshine nowhere to be found. I expected Jimmy to make quick work of this guy here… Vines tried to keep control of Garvin with a wrench of the arm, but got hip tossed for his trouble. Garvin then took over with some arm and shoulder work of his own. A scoop slam caught Garvin off guard, stalling his momentum momentarily. Bill Mercer mentioned on commentary that Chris Adams has granted Garvin a rematch for the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship. though the stipulation would be if Adams won again, Sunshine would get five minutes alone in the ring with Precious. Mercer said he has been unable to confirm that rumor, though. In the ring, Garvin pulled his opponent out of a pin at two not once, but twice. He then finished Vines off with a roll over pin that looked pretty weak. Garvin flexed and headed to ringside.
- Not a great showing here for Jimmy Garvin, as the match, finish, and opponent came off looking really weak. I’m hoping this may be the first and last appearance of Doug Vines! Dud!
- After the match, Bill Mercer met “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin and Precious at ringside for an interview. He brought forth the rematch rumor to which Garvin he confirmed! Precious protested and said she didn’t like the idea, to which Garvin shuffled her off and told her not to worry about it. He said it was a done deal and he was taking the stipulation because he’s beaten Chris Adams fair and square before and plans to do it again! The crowd started getting on his case, so he and his valet stormed off to conclude the interview.
- So, there you go! That has to be a match scheduled for Star Wars later this month… and I obviously expect the ladies to go at it! It is what the Dallas crowd really wants.
- Kevin Von Erich vs. Buddy Roberts: Our next match, set for one fall to a finish, also had a ten minute limit. Buddy kept begging off and diving for the ropes to start this one off. Then, a test of strength put him down on his knees and a dropkick then put him on his back! Buddy bailed to the floor to regroup and stall. On commentary, Bill Mercer mentioned that David Von Erich would be meeting Ric Flair for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship in Reunion Arena for Christmas Star Wars! Back in the ring, Kevin had Buddy Roberts on the mat with a STF-like leg submission. You could hear Kevin tell Roberts to stop pulling his trunks or he’d take his wig off! That popped Mercer and I. A rope break finally got both men off the mat and they started pacing around again. Roberts got the neck crank on Kevin, but was smashed into the corner face-first shortly into it. Kevin signalled for the Iron Claw and Buddy begged off on his knees. A loaded headbutt to the back of Kevin’s head rattled him, opening the door for Roberts to gain the momentum. He stomped and choked Kevin on the apron before Kevin fell out to the floor. Back in the ring, Roberts threw some wild strikes but an even wilder flying headscissors takeover into a pin kept Roberts down for a three count! Roberts protested the pin with the referee as Kevin exited.
- Nothing much to see here, as the bout went a little over five minutes. This totally felt like a ‘let’s just throw this one in here’ kind of match. Another win for Kevin and another loss for The Fabulous Freebirds. Without Michael Hayes, I’m worried the Freebirds may be completely lost… though something tells me that ‘gone for a year’ stipulation isn’t going to hold up. One star from me here for this one, though.
- Back from commercial, Bill Mercer went over some of the matches we can expect to see next week. The “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd will be in Dallas to take on Kamala. Plus, we’d be getting a tag team match pitting “Gentleman” Chris Adams and Johnny Mantell against Terry Gordy and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin.
- The Super Destroyers (Super Destroyer I & Super Destroyer II) vs. “Iceman” King Parsons & Kerry Von Erich: Before we could event get introductions done for this one, “Iceman” kicked things off with an attack on The Super Destroyers. Kerry was right there with them and the champs were put on their heels quickly! The masked men peeled their capes off on the outside as the referee attempted to regain order to properly start this match. Parsons had some sort of makeup on his face, ‘to show the damage’ of the burn from Akbar. Parsons could barely be restrained to start the match, but we eventually got going with Kerry and a Destroyer first. “Iceman” got a fired up tag early on and cleaned house with big punches and strikes. Again, Kerry tried to keep Parsons under control. Once the heels returned to the ring, they went after the face and eyes of the “Iceman”. This slowed Parsons and Kerry was in to help make a save when he was being double-teamed in the heel corner. More damage was dealt out as Parsons fought his way to the corner for a hot tag to Kerry. Once in, Kerry based the two masked men together and then all four men were in the ring. Parsons hit a nice back bodydrop on one man while Kerry worked over some punches in the corner on the other. The officially let this one keep going with all four men in the ring, when suddenly Kamala jumped into the ring and went after Kerry Von Erich. The bell rang, signalling the end of the match. Kerry was able to rally and dump Kamala over the top rope to the floor while Parsons and Brian Adias held off The Super Destroyers. Then, David Von Erich, Chris Adams, Johnny Mantell, and David Manning made it down to the ring to secure the babyface hold off of Devastation Incorporated. Mercer mentioned that “Iceman” King Parsons and Kerry Von Erich were awarded the match due to outside interference by Kamala. Mercer also mentioned that Kamala and Kerry Von Erich would be meeting at Christmas Star Wars! Unexpectedly, the heels got back into the ring and the fight resumed. The results were the same, though, as Kamala was again put out onto the floor. Finally, Devastation Incorporated headed for the back.
- I really liked the fire (no pun intended) “Iceman” King Parsons was showing in this match, even if the ‘burn’ he was sporting looked pretty silly. That said, he and Kerry worked well together and the heels were kept looking dangerous, despite having lost the match. The Super Destroyers were put over pretty big all episode and were protected with this finish here tonight. The brawl afterward was fun, too. Star and a half from me for this one.
- After the match, Bill Mercer caught up with “Iceman” King Parsons, Brian Adias, and Kerry Von Erich at ringside for some post-match comments. King Parsons shouted his way though not being finished with Akbar or The Super Destroyers. He said he now had to live with his burn scar and they were still going to pay for it! He wanted them! He wanted them! Kerry then stepped in and said not only did he make good on his promise to send Michael Hayes away from Dallas, he has already slammed Kamala once, and he’ll do it again to become $10,000 richer… even if he has to kill somebody to get it!
- Ummm, not too sure about that last line there. Kind of wild, Kerry. Seems like we’re building to maybe a six-man tag here? I think that would be a solid match!
- Bill Mercer then closed out the show from ringside, once again mentioning what we can expect for matchups next week!
FINAL THOUGHTS
It was all about Devastation Incorporated and The Super Destroyers tonight, as they were involved in basically every segment in one way or another. That said, we did get some things set up for Christmas Star Wars! This week, we found out we’d be seeing a rematch between Chris Adams and Jimmy Garvin for the WCCW American Heavyweight Championship, David Von Erich versus Ric Flair for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship, and a huge grudge match between Kamala and Kerry Von Erich! So far, so good. I’m hoping that next week, we get the rest of the matches fleshed out just before the big show!
See you all then!
