Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) We are four days away from Clash of the Champions where WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan has a rematch with Ric Flair. Plus, Dusty Rhodes is in action and Antonio Inoki is there too. Not on this show, but Clash of the Champions of course!
2.) WCW Tag Team Champions Pretty Wonderful are interviewed by Mean Gene. They’ll be wrestling the Nasty Boys in four days at the Clash of the Champions. Paul Orndorff wants everyone to get a good look of excellence and says they are a fine tune wrestling machine. He calls the Nasty Boys trailer park trash. Paul Roma says that the Nasty Boys don’t know how to read. Roma says the fans love the Nasty Boys because they are fat and shove burgers down their throats.
3.) Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes are interviewed by Mean Gene regarding their tag team match at the Clash of the Champions. Dustin says he made a terrible mistake choosing Arn Anderson to be his partner and has a broken arm because of it. Dustin says you have to just keep going and mow through whomever gets in your way. Dustin believes Arn doesn’t have any guts and Arn will get what is coming to him. Dustin puts over his father as being someone nobody else has ever seen before. They will end the Stud Stable because they love each other. Gene asks Dusty if he will be ready for this kind of test since he hasn’t been in the ring for sometime. Dusty says it’s a pleasure to ride the lightning bolt with his son into the Clash of the Champions. It’s an honor to be in the ring with Dustin. “Without family it’s not worth anything.”
4.) WCW Television Champion Lord Steven Regal is interviewed regarding his upcoming match with Antonio Inoki at Clash of the Champions. This all started when Regal got involved during a trophy celebration to Inoki at Bash at the Beach. Gene thinks that Regal owes an apology to Inoki. However, Regal reminds Gene that America BBQ’d half the country many years ago. Regal doesn’t understand why Inoki was honored while Regal doesn’t get honored for nothing. Regal put Larry Zbyszko to waste but thinks Inoki isn’t even worth lacing his boots let alone getting in the ring. Regal still points out that guys like Flair, Sting and Hogan aren’t safe. Regal will stand atop the hill victorious once and for all.
5.) Nasty Boys shared some pre-tape comments while their match was aired. Jerry Sags says that last week the champions got a little bit of taste of what they are all about. They want the champs to get ready to taste some more. Brian Knobbs says that there will be a lot of nasty going around at the Clash.
6.) Ric Flair and Sherri Martel make their way out to be interviewed by Mean Gene regarding his upcoming match with WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan at the Clash of the Champions. Flair has a surprise for the event. Flair has done it an even dozen times and thinks he should be called champ again. Sherri says that they are going to Hulk Hogan’s funeral on Wednesday. Martel puts over Flair for being able to wrestle all night long no matter the weather. Sherri can’t stand Hogan and his bleach blonde hair. Flair says that Hogan has made a mistake of falling into their trap. Everything you see today can change tomorrow.
7.) Ricky Steamboat is interviewed regarding his upcoming match with WCW United States Champion Steve Austin at the Clash. Gene thinks that Steamboat has proven that Austin can be beaten, which he did recently in a tag match. Steamboat says that week after week Austin says he can’t be beaten, but Steamboat reminds us he pinned Austin. Ricky recalls slapping Austin that made Austin sign the contract. Ricky asks who is really stupid now that Austin signed the contract that prevents him from getting disqualified. Steamboat believes he has Austin’s number.
8.) Cactus Jack is interviewed by Mean Gene. Gene says that Kevin Sullivan could have helped Cactus but instead helped his brother when they wrestled Pretty Wonderful. Cactus knows that he has always had to watch his back. Jack says that Kevin stabbed him in the back but Dave Sullivan comes out and says that Kevin never stabbed Cactus in the back. Dave promises Cactus it was a mistake. Dave wants to have pizza or steak with Cactus. Kevin comes over and says he’s never liked Cactus. Kevin never thought that Cactus would be a whiner. Kevin says they may not like each other but they are the toughest tag team in the world. Dave tries to tell Cactus not to mess with Kevin because he’s really tough. Cactus tells Kevin that he won’t hurt him. Kevin slaps Dave to shut up and tells Cactus they are still the toughest and best tag team before leaving.
9.) The Stud Stable win their six man tag match and proceed to break the arm of Scott Armstrong. However, Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes storm the ring and attack the Stud Stable. Dusty tosses Col. Robert Parker into the ring but Meng comes into the ring with the locker room emptying to try and maintain some control. Dusty Rhodes is literally biting Arn Anderson’s leg! Meng and Dusty are held apart but they have a standoff.
10.) To close the show we get a pre-tape promo from WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan who says at Cedar Rapids, Iowa he told all his buddies to stay at home because he has thousands of fans to watch his back. Hogan says that Ric Flair is in his playground now. They went to a Denny’s parking lot and had his name on a parking spot. At the Denny’s people wanted him to rip his shirt and pose. Hogan wanted to arm wrestle the cook for dinner. Hogan notes he asked why Ric Flair had a handicap spot with his name on it. It’s because he is going to be handicapped after the Clash of the Champions. Hogan wants to know what Flair will say when he comes up empty handed once again.
Final Thoughts:
It was a strong go-home show for Clash of the Champions. So much so that I’d probably actively watch the show if this was real-time. The segment with Dusty Rhodes and Meng was nicely done and hopefully there is a blowoff to that angle. There wasn’t a need for a feature match, which feels odd to say.
Thanks for reading.
