World Wrestling Federation presents Superstars
Date: 1/7/1989
From: Daytona Beach, FL
Matches:
1.) WWF World Tag Team Champions Demolition defeated Iron Mike Sharpe & Rusty Brooks
2.) Ted DiBiase defeated Scott Casey
3.) Jake Roberts defeated Pete Sanchez
4.) Big Bossman defeated Bill Mulkey
5.) Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard defeated Tim Horner & George South
6.) The Hart Foundation fought Greg Valentine & the HonkyTonk Man to a double disqualification
Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) WWF Update with Mean Gene took a look at Big John Studd working out and screaming.
2.) Ted DiBiase shared some pre-tape comments before this match saying that he promises to be a champion by the end of the year.
3.) Brutus Beefcake comes out to be the guest on the Brother Love Show. Beefcake has a bib on Love because that’s what he uses so make sure hair doesn’t go all over the place. Beefcake has several different hair styles drawn out that he would choose from in his hair vs. hair match with Ron Bass.
4.) Neidhart and Valentine kick off the main event trading right hands. Neidhart decks Valentine with a forearm shot and tags in Bret Hart. Hart atomic drops Valentine and Honky gets tagged in only to be met with a hip toss. Bret scoop slams Honky followed by a forearm drop. Bret almost pins Honky with a rollup. Bret continues to control Honky with a back breaker but gets distracted by Jimmy Hart, and Honky manages to get control of the match. Bret is double teamed in the corner for a few moments. Bret avoids Valentine who drops Honky with an elbow smash on accident. Neidhart gets the hot tag and cleans house on the heels with strikes. Neidhart backdrops Valentine and slams Honky. Neidhart sends them into each other head first. All four men are in the ring brawling. Honky and Valentine are sent into each other and crash to the canvas. Valentine prevents the Hart Attack from happening. Valentine decks Neidhart with a clothesline and uses his shinguard to lock in the figure four! Bret is brawling with Honky which the referee is watching. Bret breaks up the figure four after taking care of Honky on the floor. Jimmy Hart gets i the ring, but here comes Honky with his guitar and whacks Bret over the head with it! (**. I enjoyed the action even if it was mostly a way to develop an angle between the two teams. It seemed like a stiff guitar shot since the guitar didn’t break at all. Not sure how it was deemed a double disqualification, either.)
Final Thoughts:
A lot of promotion for the Royal Rumble, but we got a solid feature match so it was an enjoyable week for Superstars.
Thanks for reading.
