A video package highlighting last weeks Smackdown starts the show where Stephanie McMahon being forced to suspend Brock Lesnar.
Opening Contest: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Albert: Mysterio delivers a few strikes, but a knee lift stops him. Mysterio tries to dropkick Albert’s knees and hits a springboard dropkick. Mysterio hits a springboard leg drop for a two count. Albert counters and sends Mysterio into the corner to hit a sit out gorilla press slam. Albert works over Mysterio with strikes in the corner. Albert catapults Rey throat first into the middle rope. Albert covers Mysterio for a two count. Albert misses a splash in the corner and is kicked several times. Mysterio tries for a springboard, but is caught. Mysterio still hits a springboard bulldog for a near fall. Albert catches Mysterio on a springboard and is chopped down by Mysterio a few times. Albert is laid over the middle rope ad Mysterio hits the 619! Albert counters the West Coast Pop and hits an over the shoulder backbreaker to win the match clean. (**1/2. Okay, that’s a huge upset. Albert was on Velocity just a few months ago losing to guys like Funaki and now cleanly beats Mysterio. Mysterio isn’t going to hurt from this because they can play up the size difference and fans love him. Albert could be getting a monster push.) After the match, Albert splashes Mysterio in the corner and sits Mysterio on the top turnbuckle to deliver a big boot. Mysterio is upside down and has his leg trapped. Albert beats on the knee before grabbing a steel chair. Albert smashes Rey’s knee with the chair a few times. Edge runs down to the ring to make the save.
Backstage, Funaki is with Bill DeMott. DeMott says that Tough Enough was just his job nothing more, nothing less. DeMott is pissed that the best Smackdown could offer him is an interview with a guy who can barely speak English. DeMott grabs Funaki and says that he didn’t spend eleven years wrestling to get interviewed by Funaki and tosses him to the ground.
During the commercial, Rey Mysterio Jr. was carried to the back by officials and Edge.
Backstage, Edge is freaking out wanting to know what’s wrong with Mysterio.
Smackdown General Manager Stephanie McMahon makes her way out to the stage with a microphone. Stephanie is horrified over what happened to Mysterio. Stephanie says the wrestlers sacrifice their bodies for the fans. She shows footage of what she did on Monday night. She is going to make a sacrifice tonight. She stands by her decision to suspend Lesnar, but is going to allow her to share his thoughts. However, Lesnar will not be here in-person, but rather by satellite.
Second Contest: Crash Holly vs. Jamie Noble: Noble attacks before the bell and hits a neckbreaker for a two count. Noble stomps on Crash followed by a forearm drop. Noble scoop slams Holly followed by a leg drop for a two count. Noble rams Crash into the corner face first and delivers several strikes. Crash drives Noble down to the mat gut first and connects with a clothesline. Crash hits a bulldog out of the corner for a near fall as Nidia put Noble’s boot on the bottom rope. Crash goes to the floor to confront Nidia and kisses her. Nidia runs into the ring and Noble tries for the Tiger Driver, but Crash counters with the Crash Landing (Styles Clash) to win the match. (*. The losing streak continues. There wasn’t much going on here.) After the match, Noble tells Nidia he’s bringing his cousin next week to save his career.
Backstage, Dawn Marie meets with Torrie Wilson and tells her that Torrie has every right to be upset with her. Dawn says that Al is overseas and will not be back until next week. Dawn says that Al isn’t the only Wilson she’s interested in. Dawn watched Torrie in WCW and now in WWE. Dawn has watched every move and she has many feelings for Torrie. Dawn says that Torrie’s eyes are beautiful and begins to hit on Torrie. Torrie reminds Dawn that she’s engaged to her father. Dawn loves Al and asks how much Torrie loves her father. Dawn has a proposition and says if Torrie does something for her she won’t marry Al. Dawn gives her hotel room key to Torrie. Dawn says that a nobody can make a woman feel as good as a woman can.
Third Contest: Bill DeMott vs. Funaki: Funaki gets a headlock on DeMott, but is taken down to the mat and DeMott clubs away on Funaki. DeMott splashes Funaki in the corner and tosses Funaki to the mat face first. DeMott stomps on Funaki a few times. DeMott covers for a two count. DeMott kicks Funaki on the mat and drives Funaki’s knee down to the mat. Funaki tries to fight back, but is decked to the mat. DeMott chokes Funaki over the ropes to keep control. Funaki delivers a jawbreaker and strikes DeMott a few times. DeMott powerslams Funaki and hits the top rope moonsault for the win. (*. I can buy into a heel DeMott push. It looks like Smackdown is looking to build the heel side with Albert and DeMott getting wins tonight.)
Backstage, Smackdown Tag Team Champions Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero Jr. are chatting. Eddie says tonight is a big night for them. Eddie believes that Chavo will win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship tonight. Eddie is confident that he’ll be the number one contender tonight. Eddie thinks the family will be proud of them and lists all the Guerrero’s. Eddie tells Chavo they start dominating the WWE tonight. Eddie believes nobody could stop them if they have all the gold.
Brock Lesnar joins the show via satellite from Minnesota. Lesnar isn’t here to make any excuses and believes he got what he deserves for associating with Paul Heyman. Lesnar is going to get revenge on Heyman in brutal fashion. Lesnar believes he got raped from the title. Smackdown World Champion Big Show and Paul Heyman make their way out to the ring to cutoff the interview. Heyman is on the microphone and calls Lesnar his friend. Heyman wants to talk to Lesnar face to face, but Lesnar keeps losing his temper. Heyman calls Lesnar a child who disobeys his parents. Heyman couldn’t think of a better person to spank the child than Big Show. Heyman admires and respects Stephanie, but she was wrong. Heyman declares that they screwed Lesnar and did so with malice. They enjoyed screwing Lesnar and if they could do it again they would. Heyman wants Lesnar to enjoy his suspension and watch four other guys battle for the right to be the number one contender. Lesnar can’t wait to see the title match and see it in person. That leaves Heyman and Show worried.
Fourth Contest: WWE Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman vs. Smackdown Tag Team Champion Chavo Guerrero Jr.: Kidman controls Guerrero with a wrist lock, but Chavo takes Kidman down with a headlock for a moment. Kidman gets a hammerlock, but Chavo elbows free. Kidman counters a hip toss with a hurricanrana. Chavo stops Kidman with a gut buster and stomps on Kidman. Chavo is met with a boot, but knee lifts Kidman and rams Kidman gut first into the corner. Chavo pummels Kidman to the mat with kidney strikes. Guerrero delivers another gut buster for a near fall. Chavo uppercuts Kidman to the mat and locks in an abdominal stretch and uses the ropes for leverage. Chavo knee lifts Kidman and tries for a Gory Bomb, but Kidman avoids it. Chavo counters a clothesline with a knee lift for a two count. Chavo rams Kidman into the corner and delivers strikes to the ribs. Kidman dropkicks Chavo and delivers an elbow strike. Kidman backdrops Chavo followed by a clothesline. Kidman drops Chavo over his knee for a two count. Chavo counters a suplex with a rollup for a near fall. Kidman runs into a back elbow. Chavo sits on the top rope, but Kidman avoids a tornado DDT to hit a spinebuster for a near fall.
Chavo plants Kidman with a tornado DDT for a two count. Chavo clubs Kidman over the back and tries for a slam, but Kidman counters. Chavo dumps Kidman to the apron and rams the champ into the corner face first a few times. Chavo and Kidman battle on the middle rope. They trade a punch and they fall to the floor at the same time. Chavo stops Kidman on the top rope and looks for a superplex, but is shoved off. Kidman gains footing and misses the Shooting Star Press. Chavo plants Kidman with the Gory Bomb, but Kidman got his boot on the middle rope. Kidman sends Chavo through the ropes to the floor. Chavo grabs the tag championship, but Kidman decks Chavo causing Chavo to drop the belt. Kidman hits a reverse lifting DDT. Kidman hits the Shooting Star Press for the win. (**1/2. A solid match with the crowd getting into the match towards the end. It’s a big win for Kidman to get a clean win over one-half of the tag champions. Kidman could fit in well with the Smackdown Six and I hope he’s used in that manner a little more.)
Backstage, Marc Lloyd is with Edge for an interview. Edge woke up this morning and his only focus was to be the number one contender. But, now with what Albert did his focus has shifted a little bit. Edge isn’t going to lose his focus, but this match will be an outlet for his aggression towards Albert. Edge sees Albert out the corner of his eye and attacks Albert until officials keep them apart.
Tazz is in the ring for the Hip Hop Challenge between John Cena and Rikishi. Cena comes out first with B2 (Bull Buchanan). Tazz asks if Cena realizes how he’s dressed on television. Each man gets to present them rap and the crowd picks the winner. Rikishi does his rap and fights off both men until Cena clotheslines Rikishi from behind. Cena punches Tazz, and Tazz is fired up. Tazz locks in the Tazz Mission on Cena in the corner. Rikishi clotheslines B2 over the top to the floor. Rikishi and Tazz proceed to do some dancing to end the segment.
Backstage, Marc Lloyd meets up with Kurt Angle. Kurt is putting his knee brace on and tells Lloyd that his thoughts are on winning the title for the third time. Kurt wants to show he’s better than Benoit again. To show Eddie why he has gold medals. He is going to show Edge why he’s the best Smackdown wrestler ever. Kurt says he’s the next WWE Champion and it’s true.
Before the next match, Albert attacks Edge during his entrance with a steel chair. Albert whacks Edge on the knee and Edge rolls to the floor in agony. During the commercial, Edge was carried to the backstage area. However, Edge still comes out for the match before it starts with a full entrance. Edge is limping to the ring.
Main Event: Smackdown Tag Champion Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit vs. Edge vs. Kurt Angle in a number one contenders elimination match: The match started during the commercial break. Guerrero has control over the other three with stomps. Edge was laid over the middle rope after being triple teamed. Edge backdrops Guerrero and flapjacks Benoit. Edge backdrops Angle, but Guerrero chop blocks Edge for a near fall. Benoit splashes down onto Edge’s knee a few times and Angle stomps on the injured knee. Angle presses his knee onto Edge’s head. Eddie almost pins Angle with a rollup. Angle forearms Eddie a few times while Benoit rams Edge’s knee onto the canvas. Guerrero backdrops Angle to the floor. Benoit clotheslines Guerrero to the floor. Benoit chops Edge to the mat and delivers a leg drop to the knee. Edge flapjacks Benoit to the mat for a near fall. Guerrero works over Edge with strikes and dumps Edge to the floor. Guerrero suplexs Benoit over the top to the floor. Angle works over Guerrero with strikes in the corner and hits a snap suplex for a near fall.
Angle pummels Guerrero with right hands in the corner. Guerrero eye rakes Angle and keeps control with stomps on the mat. Guerrero beats on Angle with strikes. Guerrero hits a vertical suplex for a two count. Angle tosses Guerrero with an overhead suplex. Guerrero arm drags Angle to counter the Angle Slam. Guerrero hits a back suplex and hits the frog splash, but Angle kicks out at two. Benoit hits a German suplex on Guerrero and goes to the top rope. Benoit dives off the top hitting a diving headbutt, but Guerrero kicks out at two. Edge gets up and hits a lifting DDT on Benoit for a near fall. Edge sends Angle to the floor, but Guerrero decks Edge to the floor. Benoit takes Guerrero over with a series of German suplexs. Edge nails Guerrero with a spear. Benoit sends Edge to the floor and locks in the Crossfsace on Guerrero causing a submission. Guerrero has been eliminated.
Angle delivers a series of German suplexs on Benoit. Edge is on the top rope to hit a missile dropkick on Angle for a two count. Benoit chop blocks Edge on the knee. Angle clotheslines Benoit and drops his strap. Edge yanks Angle down with the Edge-O-Matic, but only gets a two count. Angle has the ankle lock on Benoit, but Benoit kicks free and the referee is knocked down. Eddie Guerrero decks Benoit with the tag belt. Edge spears Guerrero. Edge spears Benoit for the three count. Benoit has been eliminated.
Angle has the ankle lock on Edge. Edge tries to reach the ropes, but Angle pulls Edge back to the middle of the ring. Edge reverses by rolling through and Angle goes through the ropes to the floor. Angle pulls Edge to the floor and rams Edge into the ring steps face first as Smackdown goes to commercial.
Back from break, Angle pummels Edge with right hands on the mat and Edge has been busted open from the ring steps. Angle takes Edge over with a snap suplex for a near fall. Angle chokes Edge over the bottom rope. Edge fires back with chops and strikes in the corner. Edge is fired up and the crowd is behind Edge. Edge boots Angle in the corner, but runs into an overhead suplex by Angle. Angle keeps Edge on the mat with a sleeper, but Edge gets to his feet. Edge fires back with right hands and an overhead belly to belly suplex. Edge struggles to his feet and decks Angle with right hands. Edge clotheslines Angle a few times and hits a backdrop. Edge pulls Angle down from behind for a two count. Angle takes Edge over with a series of German suplexs. Edge counters a suplex with a rollup for a two count. Edge spears Angle, but only gets a two count on the cover. Edge tries for a DDT, but Angle tries for the Angle Slam. Edge counters with a lifting DDT and gets a two count. Edge heads to the top rope, but Angle runs the ropes and is shoved off by Edge. Edge missile dropkicks Angle for a two count. Edge waits in the corner for the spear. Angle blocks the spear with a kick to the face and hits the Angle Slam for a near fall. Angle pulls down the strap and locks in the ankle lock again. Edge rolls through and almost wins with a rollup. Angle drop toe holds Edge and goes back to the ankle lock. Edge tries to kick free, but Angle holds onto the ankle. Edge reaches the ropes to break the hold. Edge nails Angle with a kick to the head. Edge nails Angle with the Angle Slam for a near fall. Edge heads to the top rope, but Angle runs the ropes and hits a top rope Angle Slam. Angle covers and pins Edge to win the match and become the number one contender. (****. That was fantastic. The closing moments with Edge and Angle was incredible. A great match to end Smackdown.)
After the match, Big Show enters the ring and drops Angle with a chokeslam. Show stands over Angle with the championship raised over his head.
We go to the hotel room where Torrie Wilson has knocked on the door, but she uses the hotel key. Dawn Marie is there sitting on the bed waiting for Wilson. Dawn says that Torrie does love her father after all. Dawn will cancel the wedding if Torrie does what she asks. Torrie goes to leave, but Dawn mentions Torrie not loving her father after all and Torrie returns as Smackdown goes off the air.
Final Thoughts:
This week Smackdown was a breeze to watch. The main event is worth watching.
