Angle Developments/Notes:
1.) Jim Ross is the host of Power Hour and promotes what we’re scheduled to see on the program, which includes a singles match between Ron Simmons and Steve Austin.
2.) Windham won his enhancement match following an superplex. After the match, Steve Austin storms the ring and attacks Windham. Austin nails Windham with a short arm clothesline. Dustin Rhodes runs into the ring and grabs the WCW TV Championship from Dangerously and tosses it to Windham. Windham scares Austin from the ring to end the segment.
3.) Super Invader is associated with Harley Race. He is actually Hercules from the WWF under a mask. Invader had made his debut Wrestle War weekend having competed on Saturday Night and the PPV itself. Invader dominated the handicap match winning in short order following two powerbombs.
4.) Lance Russell and Eric Bischoff talk about the NWA Tag Team Title Tournament. They talk abut the unpredictable Headhunters from Puerto Rico. They also talk about other tag teams competing in the tournament. Russell says the Freebirds aren’t happy about their ranking. They are the WCW United States Tag Team Champions and the Freebirds share their displeasure. Hayes says they are going to find out who ranked them poorly and they will pay for it.
5.) Vegas easily wins his enhancement match following the Snake eyes in the corner.
6.) JT Southern is back in Scotty Flamingo’s corner and it appears he’s not in Flamingo’s corner each outing at this point.
7.) Badd almost wins with a rollup right at the start of the match. Badd body strikes Flamingo into the corner and plays to the crowd. Badd gets a hammerlock on Flamingo, but Flamingo forearms Badd on the lower back. Badd strikes Flamingo with another body strike. Flamingo stops Badd with a kick to the midsection, but Badd knocks Flamingo down again with a body strike. Flamingo stalls in the corner preventing Badd from continuing towards Flamingo. Badd eye rakes Flamingo, and delivers a hip toss. Flamingo scoop slams Badd. Badd body strikes Flamingo into the corner and sends Flamingo chest first into the corner followed by an elbow drop for a two count. Badd elbows Flamingo coming off the ropes for a two count. Badd takes Flamingo down with a headlock. Badd shoulder blocks Flamingo, but is kicked away quickly. Badd goes back to control with a headlock on the mat. Flamingo counters with a back suplex. Flamingo stomps Badd on the mat a few times before dumping Badd to the floor. Flamingo pulls Badd into the ring and hits a double under hook suplex for a near fall and puts a chin lock on Badd. Badd elbows free from Flamingo, but is met with a knee lift. Flamingo snapmares Badd and leaps off the middle, but Badd strikes Flamingo. Badd rams Flamingo into the corner a few times. Badd powerslams Flamingo out of the corner for a two count. Flamingo shoulder blocks Badd a few times. They collide heads with Badd falling to the mat and Southern shoves Flamingo onto Badd. However, Brad Armstrong comes out and puts Badd onto Flamingo for the win as Armstrong attacks Southern on the floor. (*1/2. Hardly what you’d expect from a Light Heavyweight division. There wasn’t much here to get excited about. The finish is corny, but I didn’t think Flamingo was going to win cleanly, nor did I ever think Badd would lose in any capacity.)
8.) Missy Does The Mail hosted by Missy Hyatt is next. Hyatt talks about Madusa getting under her skin and calls Madusa a wannabe. Hyatt plans to be in WCW for a long time and deserves to be called the first lady of WCW. We see footage from Saturday Night where Hyatt confronted Madusa. Madusa showed her swimsuit, and Hyatt threw a fit. Hyatt promotes Beach Blast and plans to embarrass Madusa in their bikini contest. Hyatt promises her outfit will leave very little to the imagination.
9.) Austin wants to do a test of strength with Simmons to kickoff the main event. Simmons accepts and Simmons gets the advantage until Austin kicks Simmons in the midsection to drop Simmons to his knees. Austin stomps Simmons on the mat jumping onto Simmons hands. Austin scoop slams Simmons and stands on Simmons chest. Simmons taunts the fans until Simmons lifts Austin into the air by his neck. Simmons drops Austin to the mat and Austin bails to the floor to regroup with Dangerously. Austin wants a handshake with Simmons, but settles for a lockup and Simmons puts a headlock on Austin. Simmons keeps the headlock on Austin for a few moments. Simmons hip tosses Austin, but is yanked down by his hair. Simmons kicks Austin away and punches Austin to the floor. Simmons backdrops Austin coming off the ropes. Austin holds onto the ropes to avoid a dropkick attempt. Austin strikes Simmons on the mat and delivers a knee drop to the lower back several times. Austin drives Simmons to the mat with a backbreaker for a two count. Austin drives Simmons to the mat with a vertical suplex for a two count. Austin backdrops Simmons coming off the ropes for a two count.
Austin keeps Simmons on the mat with a chin lock. Simmons elbows Austin, but Austin keeps control until Simmons drives Austin to the mat face first. Simmons is fired up and elbows Austin coming off the ropes. Simmons punches Austin into the corner, but Austin sends Simmons into the corner chest first and hits a back suplex. Simmons powerslams Austin coming off the ropes. Austin eye rakes Simmons, but Simmons lands on top to counter a slam attmept. Dangerously distracts from the apron allowing Austin to hit Simmons with a chair in the midsection. Simmons gains possession of the chair and hits Austin, but the referee sees it and Austin wins by disqualification. (**. A decent match with a cheap finish as the DQ finish is a bit lame. I thought they were working fairly well together and Simmons seems to be getting some momentum, so a win here for him wouldn’t have been the worse direction to go in.)
Final Thoughts:
An average episode of Power Hour this week. I feel like we’ve reached a lull in the promotion for Beach Blast. I’m hoping there’s a direction shift right after Beach Blast to kind of freshen up the TV presentation.
Thanks for reading.
